Police Arrest Suspects in Shooting at Long Beach Park

Update Murder Investigation Arrests 02/10/21:

On Feb. 10, 2021, Special Investigation Detectives coordinated the arrest of Michael Scott Doss Jr., a 29-year-old resident of Long Beach and Christian Lucille Watson, a 30-year-old resident of the City of Carson for the murder on Sep. 25, 2020. Both were already in custody regarding unrelated charges.

The victim was identified as Richard Winfrey, a 50-year-old resident of Long Beach.

Doss was arraigned for murder and is currently being held on $2,000,000 bail. Lucille was also arraigned for accessory to commit murder and is currently being held on $1,000,000 bail. Detectives believe the incident was regarding a dispute that escalated into a shooting. The suspect(s) and victim(s) were known to each other.

Original News Release 09/25/20: 

On September 25, 2020, at approximately 5:30 a.m., officers responded to a park located in the 800 block of E. 7th Street regarding a report of a shooting, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Upon arrival, officers located a male adult victim suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Officers began life-saving measures and requested paramedics. Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded and rendered medical aid, however the victim was later determined deceased at the scene. At this time, the victim is only being identified as a male adult pending notification to next of kin by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the Victim was in the park when unknown suspect(s) approached him and began shooting. The suspect(s) fled in an unknown direction. The exact motive for the shooting is currently unknown. Detectives are actively working to gather additional information to further the ongoing investigation.
