Child Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle in North Child Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle in North Long Beach

A child has died following a traffic collision in North Long Beach on Saturday afternoon, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Police said the collision occurred around 4:39 p.m. on May 16 near Paramount Boulevard and 56th Street. Officers responded to reports of a vehicle striking a child in the roadway.

When officers arrived, personnel from the Long Beach Fire Department were providing emergency medical aid to the child. The child was transported to a local hospital, where they later died from their injuries. The child was possibly around eight-years-old.

The preliminary investigation found that a 2020 Honda Civic was traveling southbound on Paramount Boulevard when the child reportedly ran into the street and was struck by the vehicle.

The driver, identified only as a 27-year-old man from Paramount, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Investigators said speed, distracted driving, and driving under the influence are not believed to have been factors in the collision.

“Our hearts are with this young child’s family, and everyone affected by this terrible traffic collision,” said Police Chief Wally Hebeish. “This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly unexpected tragedies can occur and is a solemn reminder of the importance of doing all we can to ensure everyone’s safety on our roadways.”

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact LBPD Collision Investigation Detail Detective D. Dougherty at (562) 570-7355.
Long Beach Pride Festival Cancellation Amid Safety Long Beach Pride Festival Cancellation Amid Safety Permit Dispute

The City of Long Beach released a detailed statement defending its decision to cancel the 2026 Long Beach Pride Festival, saying organizers failed to provide critical safety and permitting documents in time for the event to move forward as planned.

According to the City, festival applications of this size are normally due 65 days in advance, though expedited reviews can be requested within 14 days. Officials said staff continued working with organizers throughout the week and into the final hours before the scheduled start of the festival to review submissions and request missing information.

City officials stated additional site plans were submitted around 7 p.m. Thursday night, but the application still lacked key documents needed to issue permits. As of Friday morning, the City said it had not received approved structural plans for stages and trusses, approved electrical plans, detailed security layouts, or sufficient infrastructure details required to safely permit the event.

Despite the cancellation of the festival in its original form, City leaders and the Convention Center reportedly offered alternative venues, including the Terrace Theater plaza for up to 3,000 attendees or the Bixby Park bandshell for a free public concert. Officials said alcohol sales and fenced-off areas would not have been allowed because of the shortened timeline. Mayor Rex Richardson also offered to privately raise up to $50,000 to support either option, but organizers declined.

The City emphasized that Pride celebrations will continue across Long Beach throughout the weekend, including Sunday’s Long Beach Pride Parade at 10 a.m., which the City says it has funded and operated for the past three years. Officials also announced additional transit services, extra restroom facilities along Broadway, and a free drag show and live music event Sunday at Bixby Park hosted by Jewels of Long Beach.
Long Beach Residents Question Public Safety After Long Beach Residents Question Public Safety After Shooting and Two Stabbings

Violent incidents across Long Beach since Mother’s Day weekend are raising renewed concerns among residents who say crime feels more frequent despite city leaders reporting overall declines in crime.

On May 11 at approximately 8:52 p.m., officers responded to the 6300 block of Myrtle Avenue regarding a shooting. Police located evidence at the scene and later learned a male adult victim had driven himself to the Long Beach Police Department North Division substation with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper body. Long Beach Fire personnel transported the victim to a local hospital. The suspect fled before officers arrived, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The shooting followed two separate stabbings reported on May 10.

At approximately 8:13 p.m., officers responded to the 5600 block of Long Beach Boulevard where a male adult victim was found with a non-life-threatening stab wound to the upper body.

Earlier that morning around 5:14 a.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of Anaheim Street where another male adult victim was located with multiple non-life-threatening stab wounds to the upper body.

Both victims were transported to local hospitals, and investigators say the motive and suspect information in all three incidents remain under investigation.

The recent violence has left many residents questioning the city’s public safety messaging. Mayor Rex Richardson and city officials have pointed to statistics showing reductions in some crime categories, but many residents say shootings, stabbings, and other violent incidents continue to impact neighborhoods across the city.

Residents are now asking why crime feels like it is increasing and what additional steps are being taken to reduce violence and improve safety in Long Beach communities.

Long Beach residents are once again confronting concerns about public safety after two separate stabbings were reported within hours of each other on April 27, 2026.

The first incident occurred around 6:16 p.m. in the 1000 block of Market Street. Officers responded to reports of a stabbing and located an adult male suffering from a non-life-threatening wound to the lower body. Just a few hours later, at approximately 9:25 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Pacific Avenue, where they found a female juvenile victim with stab wounds to the upper body. She was also taken to a hospital for treatment. In this case, police quickly located and arrested a suspect who had fled the scene. As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward. Meanwhile, residents are left grappling with the reality of recurring violence and its toll on the community’s sense of safety.

People Over Politics’: Sequoia Neff Brings Public People Over Politics’: Sequoia Neff Brings Public Safety Focus to District 9 Race

LONG BEACH, Calif. — @longbeachneff Sequoia Neff, a North Long Beach resident, business owner and youth mentor, has announced her candidacy for the 2026 City Council race in District 9, challenging incumbent Joni Ricks-Oddie.

Neff, founder of a multi-state brokerage, is centering her campaign on public safety, economic growth and neighborhood investment, saying North Long Beach has been “overlooked for too long.”

A Long Beach native, Neff grew up near Houghton Park and attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School. As a young parent, she started a youth track club and basketball league to support underserved children.

With nearly 20 years in real estate, Neff says she understands local housing challenges and the struggles facing small businesses. Her public safety plan includes increasing police patrols, hiring more officers, expanding technology like cameras and license plate readers, and strengthening enforcement against repeat offenders. She also calls for improved lighting and stronger neighborhood watch programs.

Neff is also focusing on human trafficking and prostitution along the Long Beach Boulevard corridor, proposing targeted enforcement, stricter penalties near schools, and expanded services for victims.

On traffic safety, she supports cracking down on street takeovers, restoring traffic enforcement, and adding improvements like traffic calming measures and safer pedestrian crossings.

Her platform also includes boosting small businesses through grants and programs, attracting more retail, and addressing illegal dumping with stronger enforcement and cleanup efforts.

Neff is currently the only declared challenger in the District 9 race. Ricks-Oddie has represented the area since 2022. The 2026 election will determine leadership as North Long Beach faces ongoing concerns over crime, economic development and neighborhood conditions.
