Long Beach police and emergency crews responded to a series of major incidents Tuesday evening and early Wednesday morning, highlighting another busy period as the city continues to deal with violent crime and fatal traffic collisions.
The evening began around 4:03 p.m. when officers responded to the area of 16th Street and Gundry Avenue after receiving reports of two armed individuals inside a vehicle. Officers quickly located the vehicle and safely took one suspect into custody. A second suspect refused to surrender and barricaded himself inside the vehicle, prompting a response from the Long Beach Police Department’s SWAT team. After the standoff, SWAT officers took the second suspect into custody without further incident. Police recovered a firearm from the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
Later that evening, at approximately 7:40 p.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of Lewis Avenue following reports of a shooting. Investigators say a male juvenile suffered a gunshot wound to his lower body. Family members transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition. Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The night ended with a deadly traffic collision in the area of Loynes Drive and Studebaker Road. According to the preliminary investigation, a vehicle crossed over a median before plunging into the water beneath a bridge. A female passenger was rescued from the submerged vehicle, while the male driver was pulled from the water and transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
