Road Rage DUI Call Ends in Officer-Involved Shooting of Machete-Wielding Suspect

A suspected DUI and road rage incident involving a Long Beach Fire Department vehicle transporting a patient escalated into a major police response Wednesday morning, ending with an officer-involved shooting involving an outside law enforcement agency.

According to Long Beach police, officers responded around 10:07 a.m. after reports of a DUI driver involved in a road rage incident with an LBFD vehicle. The suspect fled on foot, prompting officers to establish a perimeter and activate SWAT.
The search led to UCI Health–Los Alamitos Medical Center, where the hospital was placed on lockdown as officers confronted a shirtless man armed with a machete.
During the incident, an officer shot the suspect. No Long Beach police officers were involved in the shooting, and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office will investigate. Authorities have not released the suspect’s condition
