Long Beach Utilities to set up relief program for Long Beach Utilities to set up relief program for high gas bills.

Long Beach Utilities is set to launch a natural gas price-spike relief program following City Council action Wednesday to allocate excess utility users tax revenues to help residents struggling to pay high winter gas bills.

The City of Long Beach collects a 5 percent utility users tax, or UUT, on monthly customer bills. When prices go up, tax revenue to the City’s General Fund also increases. The City Council Wednesday agreed to divert any excess funds from this increased revenue to the assistance program.

City officials expect the assistance fund to be about $1.5 million.

With the funds now allocated, Long Beach Utilities will develop a program framework and bring it to the Board of Utilities Commissioners for final approval.

The department plans to get the program up and running as quickly as possible and ensure qualifying residents can easily participate. Program funds are set to become available to residents by mid-February.

“I’m thankful the City Council took this emergency action to allow us to provide assistance to residents in need,” said Gloria Cordero, president of the Board of Utilities Commissioners. “We want to be sure to get this program up and running quickly, with as few barriers as possible, to help our struggling customers feel at ease.”

While final program details and logistics are yet to be finalized, Long Beach Utilities plans to develop the framework with an equity lens to best reach those most in need and help as many people as possible with the resources available. The program will focus on providing financial relief to Long Beach residential customers, particularly those who are low income, disabled and seniors on fixed income.

The Board of Utilities Commissioners is set to hold a special meeting to discuss the program next week. More information about the relief program will be shared as soon as it is available. #longbeach

Southwest’s new route to the Big Easy gives our community members another convenient option while also connecting more travelers nationwide to our award-winning airport,” said Mayor Rex Richardson @rexrichardsonlb

To celebrate the first flight to Louisiana on Sunday, Jan. 8, Long Beach Airport hosted the New Orleans Traditional Jazz Band to perform a second line parade—a musical celebration that typically signifies the beginning of a new life together—for departing passengers. Travelers going to New Orleans also received customized cookies commemorating the first flight.

Southwest’s flights to New Orleans—utilizing the airline’s Boeing 737 fleet—depart LGB at 12:30 p.m. on Sundays and arrive at MSY at 6 p.m. The return flight departs MSY at 4:55 p.m. and arrives back at LGB at 7:15 p.m. Originally scheduled to be a seasonal service only through March, Southwest has extended the service through their currently published schedule of July 10.

In addition to the new Sunday flights, Southwest offers daily service throughout the year between Long Beach and New Orleans through connecting or same-plane service on the airline’s point-to-point network.

“Just in time for Mardi Gras season, we gave Southwest passengers on yesterday’s first nonstop flight from Long Beach to New Orleans a big sendoff in celebration of this convenient new route,” said Airport Director Cynthia Guidry. “This connection between two great destinations also adds flexibility and options for travelers to connect with Southwest’s broader network.”

Southwest Airlines first began service from LGB in 2016 and has continued to increase its presence at the Airport since then. Including New Orleans, and added service to Orlando starting in July, the Dallas-based airline will fly nonstop to 17 U.S. cities from LGB. #longbeach #neworleans

City Issues Safety Tips for Residents Due to Sever City Issues Safety Tips for Residents Due to Severe Weather Systems.

The City of Long Beach is issuing a storm advisory for residents regarding the weather currently impacting the local coast, with rain expected to build throughout the afternoon and a significant storm system expected to impact the area later this evening, Jan. 4, and into tomorrow, Jan. 5, bringing with it significant ocean swell, high tidal conditions, high winds and heavy precipitation. Long Beach residents, especially those along the peninsula and in low-lying areas prone to flooding, should prepare accordingly by following these safety tips for severe weather.
Disaster Preparedness
Crews from the Departments of Parks, Recreation and Marine, Long Beach Utilities, and Public Works continue to work around the clock to build and fortify protective sand berms along the oceanfront peninsula to safeguard residents and property. Long Beach Fire Department Rescue Boats will monitor the coastline during the swell impact, patrol the harbor and marinas and respond to calls for service during the period of heaviest rain. City crews have conducted inspections and performed maintenance to ensure catch basins in flood-prone areas are clear of debris, and pump stations and seawall plugs are functioning. Debris booms along the Los Angeles River, the wetland mitigation site, Rainbow Harbor, and the debris skimmers are up and operational.

A base of operations is being established by the Fire Department at the Claremont Lot (54th Place and E. Ocean Boulevard). The Long Beach Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Search and Rescue, Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) and other affiliated volunteers will be stationed at this location to support and assist with additional community outreach and sandbag operations during the storm.

Long Beach City Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis ha Long Beach City Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis has issued a rain advisory for recreational beaches and bays in the City of Long Beach following the rain experienced in the last 24 hours. After any significant rainfall, unhealthy conditions may result from increased runoff from storm drain outlets and rivers, which eventually reach the City’s beaches. Recreational swimming areas should be avoided for three days following the end of a rainstorm. This advisory will be extended if the rain continues.

State law requires all local public health agencies with recreational swimming areas to notify the public when conditions might affect the health of swimmers. Further information may be obtained from the Health Department’s Water Quality Information Line at 562.570.4199 or online at longbeach.gov/beachwaterquality.

Mayor Rex Richardson Requests to Declare State of Mayor Rex Richardson Requests to Declare State of Emergency on Homelessness.

In his first act as Mayor of Long Beach, Rex Richardson requested City Manager Tom Modica to bring a declaration of a Citywide State of Emergency on homelessness before the Long Beach City Council at their next meeting on January 10th, 2023.

In a letter addressed to the City Manager (attached), Mayor Richardson and Downtown Councilwoman Mary Zendejas called for the City to be “all in” on addressing homelessness collaboratively and asked all nine City Councilmembers to commit to welcoming services that bring relief to those living on the streets in their districts.

In partnership with Mayor Richardson and Councilwoman Zendejas, the City of Long Beach will also unveil a new homelessness website, which will serve as a comprehensive resource for the community on homelessness. The site will combine resources into one dashboard and include links to available services, data, community engagement opportunities, and other resources intended for both persons experiencing homelessness and housed residents.

About Mayor Richardson: Rex Richardson is a husband, father, and the 29th Mayor of Long Beach.

Long Beach firefighters battle overnight strip mal Long Beach firefighters battle overnight strip mall fire.

Early this morning Long Beach Fire Department responded to a large commercial fire in a vacant strip mall that was undergoing renovations. The fire occurred near the intersection of Anaheim Street and Olive Avenue.

Defensive fire operations were used to extinguish the fire due to the significant fire progression and wind conditions encountered during the incident.

The fire required multiple resources and eventually ended up as a 4th alarm. This caused a significant drawdown of fire resources in Long Beach. Mutual aid was requested and received by Los Angeles County Fire Department to backfill our fire stations and provide additional resources at the scene of the fire.

Long Beach Police Department assisted with street closures and encouraged nearby residents to shelter “in-place” to address any life safety concerns.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. There were no reports of any injuries to firefighters.

The bakery @simones.donuts on the corner of E Stea The bakery @simones.donuts on the corner of E Stearns St is a long-time staple in Long Beach and is continuing to flourish. Walking in, customers see a diverse assortment of donuts and croissants. On the wall are old photos and newspaper clippings.

The menu consists of breakfast items like pastries and bagels. Simone’s also sells a variety of beverages such as iced blend coffee, smoothies, milkshakes and Thai iced tea.

The manager Melissa Eap, 30, says the bestsellers are the classic glazed donuts, the cronuts and apple fritters.

“All our regulars come in here, they have their go-to favorites depending on their preference,” says Eap. “I know a guy who comes in and he loves our orange cake donuts and those are, in my opinion, the most underrated of them.”

Simone’s Donuts is open 24 hours, seven days a week. Eap says that the weekends are usually busier than weekdays, but the shop can typically count on a morning and even a late-night rush. Depending on how busy they are, they’ll make donuts multiple times a day. The bakers are usually making donuts throughout the evening.

“We get a good amount of regulars who know around what time their favorite donut is made,” says Eap. “They’ll come in at 1 a.m. every morning because they know, ‘Oh yeah, they’re making the glaze or whatever right now’.”

Simone’s Donuts is a family business owned by Melissa Eap’s father, Kong Eap who bought it in the early 2000s. Kong Eap was a regular customer at Simone’s years before he took it over. He already owned the donut shop, Seaside Donuts Bakery in Newport Beach.

“Before he would go to work in the shop at Newport, he’d get hungry and he didn’t want to wait to get to work to have his coffee and breakfast,” says Melissa Eap. “So before he would get on the freeway to go on the 405, he’d stop by Simone’s first and then he’d come in and he would get a coffee. And his favorite thing here was their almond croissant which he did ask for the recipe from the previous owner.”

Kong Eap believed in Simone’s Donuts and cultivated a connection with the owners since he would come in every day.

Atlantic Aviation broke ground today on a $14 mill Atlantic Aviation broke ground today on a $14 million development to create an additional 30,000-square-feet of high-end hangar space and 3,000-square-feet of adjoining office space at their facility at Long Beach Airport (LGB). The environmentally sustainable design includes rooftop solar panels over approximately 38,000 square feet of hangars, estimated to generate more than 1.1 million kilowatts (kW) of solar power per year.

“We’re excited to see Atlantic Aviation expand its footprint and invest in Long Beach Airport,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “Our award-winning airport is a huge part of our local economy, and we’re continuing to grow through the development of sustainable new facilities like this one.”

Atlantic Aviation, located at 3250 Airflite Way, is a fixed-base operator (FBO) that provides ground handling, fuel, hangar facilities and office space for business and general aviation. The company’s new and expanded first-class development will be located near its existing facilities on the west side of the airfield near Wardlow Road.

“This groundbreaking is a significant milestone for Atlantic Aviation, and one we’ve been working toward for several years,” said Brian Corbett, Chief Commercial and Sustainability Officer at Atlantic Aviation. “We’re proud to continue our investment in the Long Beach aviation community and to support our team’s growth ambitions. Most important, this development marks yet another major step toward our company’s goal of achieving carbon neutral operations.”

The additional solar panels on LGB’s campus come on top of a recently completed large-scale solar project at Aeroplex Group Partners, as well as the ongoing installation of solar panels atop LGB’s parking structures, which will soon generate enough renewable energy to supply 70% of the electricity used by Airport facilities.

The new Atlantic Aviation development project also includes plans for a large-scale public work of art with an aviation theme, as recommended in the Globemaster Corridor Specific Plan for development in area.

The City of Long Beach today celebrated the ground The City of Long Beach today celebrated the groundbreaking for a new Long Beach Junior Lifeguard facility. Located on East Ocean Boulevard and Claremont Place adjacent to the Claremont Launch Ramp, the Junior Lifeguard Facility Rebuild Project includes the building of a brand new 925-square-foot facility and the demolishing the existing 530-square-foot Junior Lifeguard structure. Construction preparations for this project began in November 2022 and construction is expected to be completed prior to summer 2023.

“Our Long Beach Junior Lifeguards help ensure our beaches and waterways remain safe,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “The new junior lifeguard facility will offer first aid to beachgoers who need it and will serve as a place for our junior guards to gain hands-on experience in public safety.”

The new Junior Lifeguard Facility will enhance public safety as the facility will support the popular Long Beach Junior Lifeguard program and provide a year-round first aid stingray response area with a treatment room. The structure will also include lifeguard offices, locker rooms and provide much needed space due to the growing interest in the Junior Lifeguard program.

“So glad to see this project moving forward. The Junior Lifeguards Program is such a fantastic program that brings kids from all across the city,” said Third District Councilwoman Suzie Price. “It teaches kids first aid, physical conditioning, marine ecology, but most of all it teaches confidence, trust and teamwork. Seeing this investment in our youth and the facilities that help them learn and grow is always important to me.”

“The Long Beach Junior Lifeguard Program continues to grow and evolve. Access and outreach to all areas of our city continues to be one of our top priorities as we move forward,” said Long Beach Fire Department Marine Safety Division Chief Gonzalo Medina. “Adding a new, modernized Junior Lifeguard Headquarters helps us meet these increasing demands and significantly enhances our program. This new building will serve our youth far into the future. It will be a place to learn valuable life skills and instill principles that will make future leaders in our community.”
