A man was stabbed during an argument Tuesday morning outside the Gaucho Beach in Long Beach, according to police.

At about 10:15 a.m., LBPD responded to the 700 block of East Shoreline Drive after reports of a stabbing. Officers found a man suffering from multiple stab wounds to his upper body.

LBFD transported the victim to a hospital in stable condition.

Police determined the stabbing happened during an argument with two homeless men, one was arrested nearby on suspicion of the attack.

The stabbing occurred near the newly built Gaucho Beach the Alamitos Beach Concession Stand, a $10.1 million city project constructed in preparation for the 2028 Olympic Games.

The project was funded through the City of Long Beach Tidelands Fund, which is restricted to improvements in coastal and tidal areas.

A 53-year-old Long Beach man who went missing in the Pacific Ocean Sunday evening was found alive Monday morning after a nearly 13-hour search.

The Long Beach Fire Department received 911 calls around 10 p.m. Aug. 16 reporting two missing personal watercraft riders. LBFD, the U.S. Coast Guard and Long Beach Police Department launched a search.

Around 10:30 p.m., a Good Samaritan reported hearing a woman yelling for help near the Long Beach Breakwater. Lifeguards rescued her, and she was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

LBPD DUI Checkpoint Friday Night in East Long Beac LBPD DUI Checkpoint Friday Night in East Long Beach

The Long Beach Police Department will conduct a DUI and Driver License checkpoint Friday, August 14, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the East Division area.

Police say checkpoint locations are chosen based on data identifying areas with impaired-driving crashes. The goal is to remove impaired drivers, deter unlicensed motorists, and raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving.

LBPD reminds the public that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect driving ability. While marijuana is legal in California, driving under its influence is not.

Police urge anyone planning to drink or use impairing substances to arrange a sober ride or use alternative transportation.
Hung Family Supports New Advanced 3T MRI at @memor Hung Family Supports New Advanced 3T MRI at @memorialcare Long Beach Medical Center

MemorialCare Imaging Center at Long Beach Medical Center has added a new 3-Tesla (3T) MRI system, made possible by a donation from Hing and Doris Hung and the Hung family.

MemorialCare says the hospital is now the only facility in the greater Long Beach area offering 3T MRI technology. The system provides clearer, higher-resolution images that can help doctors identify small changes in nerves, ligaments, blood vessels and other tissues that may be harder to see with traditional MRI.

The technology supports specialties including neurology, stroke care, orthopedics, sports medicine, cancer care, heart and vascular care, and select pediatric imaging.

Patients may also benefit from faster scan times, less noise and a wider table designed to provide more space during exams.

The Hung family has previously supported MemorialCare’s Heart & Vascular Institute, including a gift that helped advance a hybrid cardiovascular operating suite.

MemorialCare officials said the new MRI expands access to advanced diagnostic care and gives physicians more detailed information to help diagnose conditions and guide treatment.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new MRI was held in August at Long Beach Medical Center.

Long Beach Wants to Borrow $50 Million: Is the Cit Long Beach Wants to Borrow $50 Million: Is the City Putting Public Property at Risk?

The City of Long Beach is considering a plan to borrow up to $50 million from Wells Fargo to pay for city projects and equipment.

The proposal works like a large credit line. The city could borrow money as needed, up to $50 million, and repay it with interest and fees.

But there is an important catch: three public properties would be used to secure the financing.

They include the Lincoln Parking Garage, the Broadway Parking Garage beneath the Long Beach Public Library, and the Silverado Park swimming pool facility.

The properties would be leased to the Finance Authority of Long Beach and then leased back to the city. The city would make payments using money from its General Fund, which also pays for police, fire, parks, libraries and other city services.

The city says the financing will provide a public benefit. However, the resolution does not explain exactly how the entire $50 million will be spent, how much interest and fees taxpayers will ultimately pay, or what happens if the city cannot make its payments.

That raises questions, especially as Long Beach faces future budget challenges.

Questions for City Officials

• What specific projects will the $50 million fund?

• How much will taxpayers pay in interest and fees?

• Why does the city need to borrow the money now?

• What happens to the three public properties if the city cannot make its payments?

• Could borrowing this money lead to cuts in police, fire, parks or other services?

• Were other financing options considered?

• Will residents receive a detailed accounting of how every dollar is spent?

Borrowing isn’t automatically irresponsible. Cities often borrow for major projects. But using public property as part of a $50 million financing agreement deserves careful public scrutiny.

The question for taxpayers is simple:

Can Long Beach afford this borrowing without making its future financial problems worse?
Vehicles Catch Fire in Parking Garage at Long Beac Vehicles Catch Fire in Parking Garage at Long Beach Apartment Building, Two Cats Rescued

Long Beach firefighters quickly contained multiple vehicles on fire at an apartment complex Monday afternoon, preventing flames from spreading into residential units and rescuing two cats from a smoke-filled apartment.

The fire was reported at approximately 2:00 p.m. at 6700 Atlantic Ave. When crews arrived, they found several vehicles burning inside the parking garage of a multi-story residential building.

Firefighters took an aggressive attack on the fire, successfully stopping the flames from spreading into the apartments above. Although the fire was contained to the vehicles, heavy smoke traveled throughout parts of the building.

As firefighters searched the building for possible fire extension and helped residents evacuate, they rescued two cats from a smoke-filled apartment. The pets were later safely reunited with their owner.

About 35 firefighters responded to the incident. No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Photos by @longbeachfire

Another Deadly Shooting Raises Concerns About Viol Another Deadly Shooting Raises Concerns About Violence in Long Beach

A man was shot and killed early Friday morning in Long Beach, marking another deadly act of gun violence as residents continue to voice concerns about crime across the city. The new proposed city budget for 2027 is also a major concern for the city.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, officers responded at about 12:59 a.m. on July 31 to the 700 block of Magnolia Avenue after reports of a shooting. They found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately began lifesaving efforts. Long Beach Fire Department personnel later pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Police said the suspect or suspects fled before officers arrived. Homicide detectives are investigating the shooting, and the motive remains unknown.

The homicide comes during another violent week in Long Beach. On Wednesday, a 13-year-old was shot, and on Thursday, another stabbing was reported. Those incidents have added to growing concerns from residents, who say the city continues to see too many shootings, stabbings, and murders.

Many residents are questioning whether city leaders are doing enough to address violent crime, saying they want stronger action to improve public safety and prevent more tragedies.
Long Beach’s Nearly $4 Billion Budget Raises Quest Long Beach’s Nearly $4 Billion Budget Raises Questions Over Spending and Public Safety

Long Beach leaders have released a proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget approaching $4 billion, but the spending plan is already raising questions from residents about priorities and the city’s financial future.

City officials say Long Beach is facing major challenges, including slower tax revenue growth, rising employee costs, inflation, and uncertainty over future funding. Officials have warned the city could face a $60 million to $80 million budget gap in coming years if expenses continue to grow faster than revenue.

To address the financial pressure, the city is considering possible reductions, including delaying projects, cutting department spending, and leaving some positions vacant.

Public safety has become a major concern during the budget discussions. While Long Beach has not approved cuts to fire engines, budget planning materials included possible scenarios that could reduce fire resources, including eliminating one fire engine and one paramedic rescue ambulance if deeper cuts are needed. City officials say these are options being reviewed, not final decisions.

The possibility has raised concerns among residents who worry fewer emergency resources could impact response times and public safety.

Some residents are also questioning whether the city is spending money in the right areas. Critics say Long Beach should focus more on everyday issues such as fixing streets, improving public safety, addressing homelessness, and keeping neighborhoods clean before funding new programs and projects.

Mayor Rex Richardson and City Manager Tom Modica say the proposed budget is focused on protecting essential services while creating a more sustainable financial future.

The FY27 budget will now go through public meetings and City Council hearings before a final vote later this year, giving residents a chance to weigh in on how the city spends billions in taxpayer dollars.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, the collision occurred on July 21, 2026, at approximately 1:05 p.m. in the 400 block of Golden Shore. Officers responded to reports of an injury traffic collision involving a Long Beach Transit bus and a male pedestrian.

When officers arrived, they found the pedestrian in the roadway suffering from upper-body injuries. Good Samaritans provided aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived. The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

Preliminary investigators determined the Long Beach Transit bus was making a left turn onto an access road when it struck the pedestrian, who was crossing the street. The bus driver immediately stopped and cooperated with investigators.

Police said speed, distracted driving, and impaired driving are not believed to have been factors in the collision.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact LBPD Collision Investigation Detail Detective Dougherty at (562) 570-7358.

Police contacted a male suspect who refused to exit a residence. After officers and crisis negotiators attempted to de-escalate the situation without success, SWAT personnel responded and safely took the suspect into custody.

About an hour later, at approximately 11:26 p.m., officers responded to the 1900 block of East Del Amo Boulevard after reports of a stabbing. According to the preliminary investigation, the victim became involved in a physical altercation with another adult male, which escalated when the suspect stabbed him. The suspect remains under investigation.

The violence continued into Tuesday morning. At approximately 4:18 a.m., officers responded to the 4600 block of East Goldfield Avenue regarding a shooting. The evening began around 4:03 p.m. when officers responded to the area of 16th Street and Gundry Avenue after receiving reports of two armed individuals inside a vehicle. Officers quickly located the vehicle and safely took one suspect into custody. A second suspect refused to surrender and barricaded himself inside the vehicle, prompting a response from the Long Beach Police Department’s SWAT team. After the standoff, SWAT officers took the second suspect into custody without further incident. Police recovered a firearm from the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.

Later that evening, at approximately 7:40 p.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of Lewis Avenue following reports of a shooting. Investigators say a male juvenile suffered a gunshot wound to his lower body. Family members transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition. Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Emergency Funds Drain: Residents Ask if Long Beach Emergency Funds Drain: Residents Ask if Long Beach City Hall Is the Real Disaster

The City of Long Beach plans to use $27 million in reserve funds, including $16.5 million from its emergency reserve, to cover a major budget shortfall before the fiscal year ends on Sept. 30.

City officials say tax revenue has fallen while costs continue to rise. Lower utility tax collections, weaker sales and property tax revenue, reduced federal health funding, and higher labor costs have left the city about $27 million short despite months of budget cuts.

Officials also point to the cost of hiring more police officers and firefighters to fill long-vacant positions, along with an $11 million gap in the Health Department after federal funding was reduced.

City Manager Tom Modica said the city will present a proposed 2027 budget on July 30 that will include “very difficult changes,” warning that service reductions are expected while the city works to rebuild its emergency reserves.

The budget concerns come as many Long Beach residents say they don’t feel safe walking the city’s streets after multiple recent shootings and stabbings. Some residents have criticized City Manager Tom Modica, Mayor Rex Richardson, and the City Council, arguing they believe the city’s ongoing financial problems and public safety concerns amount to a local crisis worthy of emergency-level attention. City leaders, however, say the emergency reserve is being used because of the city’s financial challenges, not because Long Beach is facing a declared natural disaster.

The Long Beach City Council will review the proposed budget in August before adopting a final spending plan in September.

According to the preliminary investigation, two male suspects fired multiple shots toward the victim before fleeing the area. No arrests have been announced, and investigators are still working to determine the motive and identify the suspects.

Another Shooting Reported in Long Beach as Violenc Another Shooting Reported in Long Beach as Violence Continues

A woman was hospitalized early Wednesday morning after being struck by gunfire in North Long Beach, marking yet another violent incident as the city continues to grapple with recent shootings and stabbings.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, officers responded at approximately 3:21 a.m. on July 15, 2026, to the 6700 block of Long Beach Boulevard regarding a hit-shooting.

Preliminary investigators determined an unknown suspect fired multiple shots in the direction of an adult female victim, striking her. Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported the victim to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No suspect information has been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The latest shooting comes amid a string of recent violent crimes across Long Beach, including multiple shootings, stabbings, and last weekend’s officer-involved shooting in Bixby Knolls, where an off-duty Long Beach police officer was reportedly approached by armed robbery suspects, robbed at gunpoint, and fired his weapon during the confrontation.

Despite the recent increase in violent incidents, critics argue that city officials continue to focus on messaging that crime is declining while residents continue to witness shootings, stabbings, and other violent crimes occurring across the city.

Anyone with information regarding this shooting is encouraged to contact the Long Beach Police Department. The investigation remains ongoing.
