Beaches West of Belmont Pier Closed Due to Sewage Spill

Long Beach City Health Officer, Dr. Anissa Davis, ordered all swimming areas west of the Belmont Pier closed for water contact, due to a sewage spill.

According to a report received from the Los Angeles County Health Department yesterday, 9,000 gallons of sewage was discharged into the Los Angeles River from a sewage line controlled by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. The spill occurred yesterday afternoon at approximately 1 p.m., in the City of Commerce, approximately 17 miles from Long Beach. The total spill was estimated at 9,500 gallons.  500 gallons were captured and 9,000 gallons entered the storm drain and flowed into the Los Angeles River. Water testing will continue until results are in compliance with State water quality standards.
