Long Beach opens overnight parking for people slee Long Beach opens overnight parking for people sleeping in vehicles.

The City of Long Beach is expanding its Safe Parking Program, which provides a safe, dignified environment for people currently sheltering in their vehicles to park overnight while receiving access to basic needs and being connected to services.

Beginning Monday, March 20, this site, located in an underutilized parking lot on Queens Way, will be open daily from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. and will have space for approximately 50 passenger vehicles. The lot will not be open during the day. Safe Parking program participants will have access to various amenities and resources at this new site, including a pet relief area, restrooms and hand washing stations. The site is anticipated to operate through Sunday, May 21.

The location will not impact ongoing repairs for the Queen Mary, and will not impact operations, special events or nearby businesses. Outreach was conducted to businesses within the area to ensure they were notified of the forthcoming operations and business resources available to them. More information is available in the FAQs.

The location will also provide two security guards and Homeless Services Bureau staff on site who will connect clients with services and offer housing-focused case management. People interested in participating in the program must first receive a referral from the Multi-Service Center (MSC), located at 1301 W. 12th St., or through outreach, including the Mobile Access Center.

Magic Bullet Fund Helps Long Beach Dog with Cancer Magic Bullet Fund Helps Long Beach Dog with Cancer Treatment.

Dogs and cats are diagnosed with cancer daily and without having expensive pet insurance, there are pet owners who feel helpless due to the high costs of veterinary services. Thankfully there are organizations like the Magic Bullet Fund which are there to help pet owners that have a canine or feline who provide financial resources for those in need.

Sergeant, a six year-old german shepherd from Long Beach was diagnosed with gastrointestinal lymphoma and needed treatment as soon as possible.

His owner, Erwin Dardon had to gather $5,000 in order to get Sergeant an emergency surgery on Thanksgiving of last year. Dardon gathered whatever was in his savings account as well as a sizable donation from another foundation which gave him a couple thousand dollars to help out.

The chemotherapy that is required for Sergeant is called CHOP protocol which is a total of 16 weeks of treatment. Dardon said each treatment can be between $600 to $1,000 which is a large amount especially if the pet is being treated weekly.

“The Magic Bullet Fund is an amazing foundation because what they do is when you apply, if you are eligible, they help you with a certain amount to start with…You have to agree to volunteer to help and bring in donations that way you will be able to utilize the donations that they are giving you,” said Dardon. “It’s a good way to get people involved and not just give the donations because you’re actually helping your pet out.”
He said the MBF started him off with $3,200 which he had to match with donations on his own. Veterinary costs in the United States are very high and Dardon said that having organizations like this are a blessing to pet owners who need the help.
There are situations like this which impact the lives of pets and their owners daily, organizations like the MBF give an opportunity at an extended life. The website is https://themagicbulletfund.org/ and people can visit to either apply, donate or gather more information on the services and mission that the organization has.

On March 17, 2023, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. in the South Division.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,”said Lieutenant Jose Flores. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”

The LBPD reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Long Beach Issues Storm Preparedness and Safety Ti Long Beach Issues Storm Preparedness and Safety Tips.

The City of Long Beach is issuing a storm advisory for residents and visitors in anticipation of the severe winter weather expected to impact Long Beach and the surrounding areas beginning today, Thursday, Feb. 23, through Saturday, Feb. 25, including excessive precipitation, high winds and below-average temperatures. On Friday, Feb. 24, in the afternoon, there also may be some high swell activity. The City recommends people remain inside during peak periods of the storm and limit traveling as much as possible. Long Beach residents, especially those along the peninsula and in low-lying areas prone to flooding, should prepare accordingly.

During periods of significant rainfall, residents are also advised to:

Check the Recreational Water Monitoringwebpage for beach advisories. After any significant rainfall (0.10″ or more), high levels of bacteria from storm drains, rivers and polluted runoff enter the ocean. People should avoid all ocean water contact for at least 72 hours after rainfall.
Avoid areas that are subject to sudden flooding.
Avoid driving through a flooded road or walking across a flowing stream of water.
Slow down at intersections, especially if signal lights are not working, and treat them as stop signs. Be cautious while driving, especially at night.
Take appropriate steps to be prepared by securing personal property and vehicles in areas that are prone to flooding.
Avoid unnecessary trips. If you must travel during the storm, dress in warm, loose layers of clothing. Advise others of your destination and estimated arrival time.
Be aware of utility workers working in or near the road.
Stay off sand berms and stay away from City vehicles and machinery operating along the coastline.
Keep pets inside and ensure they have shelter from the storm.
Place refuse and recycling carts on the parkway or driveway apron.
Report street flooding or downed trees by calling 562.570.2700.
Report downed power lines by calling 9-1-1.

Long Beach Utilities to set up relief program for Long Beach Utilities to set up relief program for high gas bills.

Long Beach Utilities is set to launch a natural gas price-spike relief program following City Council action Wednesday to allocate excess utility users tax revenues to help residents struggling to pay high winter gas bills.

The City of Long Beach collects a 5 percent utility users tax, or UUT, on monthly customer bills. When prices go up, tax revenue to the City’s General Fund also increases. The City Council Wednesday agreed to divert any excess funds from this increased revenue to the assistance program.

City officials expect the assistance fund to be about $1.5 million.

With the funds now allocated, Long Beach Utilities will develop a program framework and bring it to the Board of Utilities Commissioners for final approval.

The department plans to get the program up and running as quickly as possible and ensure qualifying residents can easily participate. Program funds are set to become available to residents by mid-February.

“I’m thankful the City Council took this emergency action to allow us to provide assistance to residents in need,” said Gloria Cordero, president of the Board of Utilities Commissioners. “We want to be sure to get this program up and running quickly, with as few barriers as possible, to help our struggling customers feel at ease.”

While final program details and logistics are yet to be finalized, Long Beach Utilities plans to develop the framework with an equity lens to best reach those most in need and help as many people as possible with the resources available. The program will focus on providing financial relief to Long Beach residential customers, particularly those who are low income, disabled and seniors on fixed income.

The Board of Utilities Commissioners is set to hold a special meeting to discuss the program next week. More information about the relief program will be shared as soon as it is available. #longbeach
