@lbcitycollege Receives Historic $30 Million Gift From Philanthropist.

The College received the gift in support of LBCC’s equity and racial justice work.

LBCC received the tremendously generous gift of $30 million from author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. This is the single largest donation the College has received in its almost 95-year history, and one of largest single-donor gifts given to a California Community College.

The award was given in recognition of LBCC’s leadership and transformative work in responding to the College’s changing demographics, closing equity gaps and work in racial justice. LBCC also intensified its race conscious efforts and adopted the Long Beach Framework of Reconciliation in Support of the Black Community to address the College’s own institutional racism that may hinder students of color from success. These actions were in response to the protests that took place in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd and others in the Black community last summer. 31-Year-Old Arrested after Hit-and-Run Killing Sec

31-Year-Old Arrested after Hit-and-Run Killing Security Guard.

On June 14, 2021, LBPD detectives arrested a suspect for a hit-and-run traffic collision that occurred on June 12, 2021, near the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue, which resulted in the death of a male adult. The suspect has been identified as Quentin Darnell Black, a 31-year-old resident of the City of Moreno Valley, who was booked for one count of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and one count of felony hit-and-run resulting in death or injury. Bail was set at $100,000.

On June 12, 2021 at approximately 3:09 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue regarding an injury hit-and-run collision which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a vehicle had collided into a security guard shack, striking the security guard who was inside. Officers performed life-saving measures on the security guard until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived. Fire Department personnel continued administering life-measures, but the security guard succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2012 Chevy Tahoe was driving at a high rate of speed when it appeared to lose control and strike the security guard shack, which was occupied by a security guard at the time of the collision.

The driver of the Chevy Tahoe abandoned the vehicle, fled on foot and is currently outstanding.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and identified the security guard as 54-year-old Derrick Smith of Los Angeles.

Hit-and-Run Kills Man Working inside Security Guard Shack. On Saturday at 3:09 p.m., LBPD officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue regarding an injury hit-and-run collision which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Man hit during car-to-car shooting in Long Beach. On Saturday at 9:50 a.m., Long Beach police officers were dispatched to the 3300 block of Cover Street regarding an assault with a deadly weapon. When LBPD officers arrived they contacted a male adult victim with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower torso.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for his injuries.
The victim stated he was in a verbal dispute with a male suspect in front of a business on the 3300 block of Cover Street. Following this dispute, both parties drove away and while in their respective vehicles, a second verbal dispute occurred which resulted in the suspect shooting the victim.

On June 11, 2021, detectives arrested a suspect for a hit-and-run traffic collision that occurred on June 10, 2021 on Long Beach Boulevard and 67th Street, which resulted in the injury of a male infant.

Through the combined efforts of numerous detectives, the suspect vehicle involved in the incident was located and recovered the night of June 10, 2021 in the Lindbergh Neighborhood of Long Beach.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as 62-year-old Burnett Livingston, resident of Compton. He was arrested on June 11, 2021 and was booked for felony hit-and-run. His bail is set at $50,000.

Long Beach, CA - On June 9, 2021, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued new guidance for individuals for the use of masks for the prevention of spreading COVID-19. This updated guidance aligns with the masking guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and goes into effect on June 15, 2021.

“It’s important for workers and small businesses that we align our masking rules with the State,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “We do not plan to have more stringent rules than set out by the CDC and the California Department of Public Health.”

Under the new CDPH guidance, fully vaccinated individuals are not required to wear a facial covering except in certain settings such as healthcare settings, on public transportation, including but not limited to airplanes, buses, taxis and ride-shares, and indoor in K-12 schools, childcare and other youth settings, and certain congregate living settings (eg. homeless shelters and detention facilities). The City of Long Beach will align with the State on all masking guidelines.

Facial coverings remain required for unvaccinated individuals in indoor public settings and businesses, including but not limited to restaurants, retail establishments and family entertainment centers.

The CDPH also set guidelines for mega events, characterized as indoor events with more than 5,000 people or outdoor events with more than 10,000 people.

Indoor mega events such as conventions, conferences, expos, sporting events and concerts must adhere to the following guidelines, in addition to the general public health recommendations:
Verification of fully vaccinated status or a pre-entry negative test result is required of all attendees.
Information will be prominently placed on all communications, including the reservation and ticketing systems, to ensure guests are aware of testing and vaccination requirements (including acceptable modes of verification).

Detectives from the @longbeachpd.ca Collision Investigation Detail are seeking the public’s help in identifying the driver of an early-'90s model white Ford Explorer who is believed to be involved in a hit-and-run injury traffic collision on Long Beach Boulevard and 67th Street, which resulted in the injury of a male infant.

The incident occurred on June 10, 2021, at approximately 11:29 a.m. and resulted in the infant being struck by the white Ford Explorer, while the infant was being pushed in a stroller by his mother. Responding officers transported the 7-month-old infant and his mother to a local hospital. The infant had non-life-threatening injuries and is currently in stable condition. The mother was uninjured, and no other injuries were reported.

Police Seek Public’s Help Locating At-Risk Missing Person Mary Margaret Robinson. The Long Beach Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating 57-year-old at-risk missing person Mary Margaret Robinson, who was last seen near the Long Beach Community Hospital on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, at approximately 11:36 a.m.

Robertson was traveling in an unknown direction in a wheelchair following her appointment at the hospital. Robinson suffers from medical conditions that require life-sustaining medication and may become disoriented if this medication is not taken.

The at-risk missing person is described as follows: Age:

57 years old
Gender: Female
Race: White
Height: 5’7″ tall
Weight: 140 pounds
Date / Time Last Seen: 6/9/2021 at approximately 11:36 a.m.
