One Injured After Explosion Destroys House in Long Beach

A house in Long Beach was completely destroyed in an explosion Monday morning, leaving one person injured and causing damage to a nearby structure.

The explosion occurred shortly after 11 a.m. at a residence on the 2800 block of Gale Avenue. Authorities believe the blast was “likely related to a gas leak from an appliance.” The explosion demolished an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) back house on the property, while a front structure sustained minor damage.

A man in his 30s was rescued from the debris and transported to a trauma burn center. His current condition is unknown. The injured man’s family is believed to live next door to the site of the explosion.

Firefighters quickly extinguished a small fire sparked by the blast, and inspectors are continuing to investigate the cause. The back house, classified as an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), was deemed a total loss, according to the fire department.

The area around Gale Avenue and West 28th Street remains closed as the investigation continues.

Double Homicide Suspect Found Dead After Long Beach Standoff with SWAT

A double homicide suspect was found dead after barricading himself inside a Long Beach home on Monday, following a fatal shooting that claimed the lives of two people.

SWAT officers and police surrounded the residence for over five hours, trying to establish contact with the suspect, who had fled the scene of the shooting.

Long Beach Police responded to the 300 block of East 63rd Street after receiving a report of gunfire around 11:15 a.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered a woman with gunshot wounds to her upper torso and a man with undisclosed injuries. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was transported to a hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The standoff began after officers tracked the suspect, an adult male, to a nearby home where he barricaded himself.

Authorities later confirmed that the suspect was found dead inside the home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation remains ongoing.

DUI Checkpoint Planned by Police Tonight in North Long Beach

On Thursday, September 12, 2024, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) will be conducting a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and Driver License (CDL) checkpoint. The checkpoint will operate from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. in the North Division area.

The LBPD selects DUI checkpoint locations based on data showing incidents of impaired-driving-related crashes. The primary objective is to ensure public safety by identifying and removing impaired drivers from the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” said Lieutenant Jose Flores. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”

The LBPD also reminds drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can affect a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely. Additionally, although marijuana use is legal for both medicinal and recreational purposes, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.

Those charged with a first-time DUI can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license.

Funding for this checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) is urging drivers to prioritize safety on the roads. With increased travel and festivities, the department is launching an enforcement campaign, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” aimed at reducing impaired driving and preventing accidents.

DUI checkpoint scheduled for Friday, August 23, from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

- **Plan Ahead**: If you’re planning to drink, arrange for a designated driver, use ride-sharing services, taxis, or public transportation.
- **Buckle Up**: Wearing a seatbelt is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself in a crash.
- **Stay Alert**: Avoid distractions like texting or eating while driving. Stay focused on the road.
- **Follow Speed Limits**: Speeding decreases reaction time and increases the severity of crashes.
- **Watch for Pedestrians and Cyclists**: With more people enjoying outdoor activities, be extra vigilant and share the road responsibly.
- **Take Breaks**: For long trips, take regular breaks to stay alert and avoid fatigue.

To support their safety mission, the LBPD will increase patrols from August 16 through Labor Day (September 2), focusing on drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Anyone who suspects a driver may be impaired is encouraged to call 9-1-1 to help prevent potential accidents.

Police Shoot Man Brandishing Replica Gun at Long Beach Metro Station

A man was shot and injured by police Wednesday night at the Pacific Avenue Station in Long Beach after brandishing what was later determined to be a replica firearm, according to authorities.

The incident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. when officers responded to multiple reports of a man displaying a gun on the platform at the Metro station located on West 5th Street and Pacific Avenue, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) reported.

Upon arrival, the suspect attempted to flee the scene, prompting officers to pursue him on foot. During the chase, an officer-involved shooting took place, LBPD spokesperson Allison Gallagher confirmed.

In the aftermath of the shooting, video footage captured officers approaching the injured suspect and kicking away what appeared to be a weapon. It was later confirmed to be a replica firearm.

Officers administered first aid at the scene before the suspect was transported to a nearby hospital, where he received treatment and was medically cleared. He has since been transferred to Long Beach City Jail for booking, Gallagher added.

The Metro station was closed for several hours following the incident but reopened early Thursday morning. No details about the suspect’s identity or the reason for his presence at the station have not been released. No officers were injured in the confrontation.

A fatal shooting occurred in North Long Beach on Tuesday afternoon, leaving a man dead and prompting a search for the suspect.

The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) reported that the incident took place around 1:30 p.m. on Lime Avenue near 59th Street, in proximity to the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library.

The victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene before officers could arrive, according to LBPD spokesperson Alyssa Baeza. The shooter had already fled the area by the time law enforcement responded.

In the aftermath of the shooting, officers canvassed the neighborhood, interviewing potential witnesses. A helicopter was briefly deployed to assist in locating the suspect. As of now, no description of the shooter or shooters has been released.

Homicide detectives are currently on the scene conducting their investigation. Baeza indicated that additional information would be made available as the investigation progresses.

Snoop Dogg will be among the torchbearers for the Olympic flame in the final stretch leading up to the opening ceremony of the Paris Games this Friday. The 52-year-old artist will carry the torch through the streets of Saint-Denis, a northern suburb of Paris that houses the Stade de France Olympic Stadium. This announcement was made by Saint-Denis Mayor Mathieu Hanotin on social media platform X.

“Saint Denis: last step before the Eiffel Tower. An international cast @SnoopDogg for the last stretch of the Olympic Flame,” Hanotin wrote.

Snoop Dogg, also contributing to NBC’s coverage of the Games, is widely recognized in the sports world for founding the Snoop Youth Football League, with its championship game known as the “Snooper Bowl.”

Joining Snoop Dogg in carrying the torch on Friday will be French actress Laetitia Casta and French rapper MC Solaar.

The identity of the person who will light the Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremony remains a closely guarded secret, known to fewer than a dozen individuals. Tony Estanguet, president of the Paris 2024 organizing committee, revealed on Sunday that the person chosen to light the cauldron is still unaware of their selection.

Speculation about the final torchbearer includes prominent figures such as Marie-Jose Perec, a three-time gold medalist in track and field, and soccer legend Zinedine Zidane, who led France to the World Cup title in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000.
