New Electric Container Cranes at The @portoflongbe New Electric Container Cranes at The @portoflongbeach. SSA Marine is now operating the first of nine electric container yard cranes at the Port of Long Beach’s Pier J, marking a significant milestone in a goal to transition to zero emissions terminal equipment by 2030.

The demonstration of the electric rubber tired gantry cranes is part of the Zero-Emissions Terminal Equipment Transition Project, which is funded in large part by a $9.7 million California Energy Commission grant with additional cost share support from an Environmental Protection Agency Region 9 Diesel Emission Reduction Act grant. The Port, the CEC and Southern California Edison are partnering on the project to bring 25 vehicles that are zero- or near-zero emissions to three of the Port’s marine terminals and logistics truck provider Total Transportation Services Inc. to test their performance in a real-world setting.

“Imagine a port where a ship slows down on approach to reduce emissions, plugs into the electrical grid at berth instead of burning fuel to run vital systems, and is worked by zero-emissions cranes, yard vehicles and trucks,” said Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero. “That’s our reality in Long Beach, and the goals of our tests and demonstrations are to eventually make it possible to do everywhere.”

“The future of the industry is zero emissions,” said Long Beach Harbor Commission President Frank Colonna. “The Port of Long Beach will continue to generate economic opportunity as we show that jobs and environmental sustainability can work together.”

“SSA Terminals is proud to partner with the Port to achieve our shared goal of implementing zero-emission cargo handling equipment,” said SSA Superintendent Scott Hainlen, the project coordinator. “We look forward to continuing this partnership with the Port as we explore all options to help do our part to continue to reduce our carbon footprint in Long Beach.”

In 2017, the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles approved an update to their Clean Air Action Plan, setting a goal of transitioning all terminal equipment to zero emissions by 2030. Learn more on our website #longbeach

Late last night, the exterior of the Long Beach Co Late last night, the exterior of the Long Beach Convention Center was vandalized. The incident is believed to be in reaction to the city’s decision to partner with the HHS in the housing of migrant children at the Long Beach Convention Center, who are currently detained at the border. The soon to be “emergency shelter” has been spray painted to read messages which express opposition to what some argue to be the inhumane treatment of children. The details of this incident are still obscure, and the parties responsible are yet to come forward explicitly.

Rally at City Hall regarding Long Beach Providing Rally at City Hall regarding Long Beach Providing Migrant Children with Temporary Emergency Shelter

A large rally gathered Tuesday afternoon at Long Beach City Hall to protest city officials’ decision to provide migrant children with temporary emergency shelter at the Long Beach Convention Center.

The Long Beach City Council and Mayor Garcia are considering an item to authorize City staff to establish an emergency intake site for unaccompanied migrant children at the Long Beach Convention Center.

Members of the Long Beach community rallied after the Long Beach Immigrant Rights Coalition called for a protest via Instagram that was sparked by the recent call for Long Beach Convention Center to house immigrant children.

“Let’s not make this as a model,” said Gaby Hernandez, Executive Director at Long Beach Immigrant Rights Coalition. “We want to make sure that this is not a new version or rebranding of detention centers. We’re asking that they [city officials] look for alternatives and that this does not go beyond the 90 days.”
Long Beach specifically has been requested by the federal government to assist unaccompanied minors currently housed in overcrowded Border Patrol facilities. The Convention Center would temporarily accommodate up to 1,000 children for a period of 90 to 120 days.

Federal officials chose the Long Beach Convention Center to be the optimal site to provide housing, food, recreational and other services to these children in need.

The federal government would be responsible for both funding and providing the major services needed to care for the children, with Long Beach playing a supporting role, providing the facility, and making connections to other appropriate non-profit and government services.

“I hope that people are watching,” said Hernandez. “The decisions that are being made are not being fully transparent, it was a closed session.”

One motorcyclist died in a traffic collision near One motorcyclist died in a traffic collision near north Wrigley on Sunday afternoon.

Around 1:45 p.m., officers arrived near Magnolia Avenue and 32nd Street to investigate a traffic collision involving a motorcycle and vehicle.

Upon arrival, officers located a 2001 Yamaha motorcycle that had struck a 2017 Honda Civic on Magnolia Avenue at the intersection with 32nd Street. Officers located the driver of the motorcycle and a citizen who was performing life-saving measures. The Long Beach Fire Department arrived on scene and performed life-saving actions toward the motorcyclist, but the motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The motorcyclists identity is yet to be known and released to the public.

Initially, investigators on the scene found that the 2001 Yamaha motorcycle was traveling northbound on Magnolia Avenue at a high rate of speed. The 2017 Honda Civic stopped at the stop sign on 32nd Street before continuing westbound across Magnolia Avenue.

The Yamaha motorcycle struck the Honda Civic in the middle of the intersection.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office will conduct their own investigation to identify the motorcyclist and notify next of kin.

The driver of the Honda Civic was identified as a 71-year-old female resident of Long Beach who stayed on scene and cooperated with the investigation.

The incident is being actively investigated by police officials.
Woman with rifle shot and killed by police in Long Woman with rifle shot and killed by police in Long Beach.

On Friday morning at 5:15 a.m., Long Beach Police officers and Long Beach Fire simultaneously responded to the 2800 block of Golden Avenue after a 9-1-1 call about a man who appeared to have had a heart attack and also a woman threatening suicide. It later turned out the man was dead inside the residence with a laceration to his neck. But officers did not discover him right away because as they entered the residence and observed a large amount of blood, officers were immediately confronted by a woman with a rifle. Officers quickly exited the residence, set up a perimeter, and formed a plan to de-escalate the situation.

Officers made repeated attempts to communicate with the woman in an effort to get her out of the residence and negotiate her surrender. She did not respond.

After continued de-escalation attempts, the woman arrived at the door of the residence and officers continued to communicate with her. The officers said they saw the woman point a rifle at them. That’s when an officer-involved shooting occurred.

Afterward, officers entered the residence and discovered the man on a bedroom floor with a serious laceration to his neck. Investigators are still trying to find out how he was wounded.

Both the woman and the man were determined to be dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office will determine cause of death, identify the decedents, and notify their next of kin.

The motive remains under investigation. Detectives believe the two decedents knew each other. A rifle was recovered at the scene.

Three officers were involved in the officer involved-shooting, and were not injured during the incident. The officers’ body-worn cameras were activated and captured the incident.

As with all officer-involved shooting incidents, the Department will be conducting a full and thorough multi-level review of the incident. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent investigation of the incident, as they do with all officer-involved shootings that result in injury or death.
