Mayor Robert Garcia and city officials announced late last month that Long Beach would be welcoming several hundred migrant children to be housed at the Long Beach Convention Center until a time in which the reunification of them and their families was possible (prospectively 7-10 days for each child to be specific). After two weeks of operation, with a lack of publicly available data, the facility has failed to reunite any children with their families or sponsors thus far. According to Forbes, only four families throughout the U.S., separated under the Trump administration, have been reunited since President Biden took office. Though the housing of migrant children here in Long Beach has been well publicized, their transportation out of the city, and in this instance, the state, has not.

Long Beach Moves into State’s Covid19 Yellow Tie

Long Beach Moves into State’s Covid19 Yellow Tier.

@lbhealthdept has issued an updated Health Order, effective at 11:59 p.m. on May 5, as Long Beach enters the Yellow (Minimal) Tier, the third of four tiers outlined under the State’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy. The tiered system is based on three key metrics: the number of new cases per day (per 100,000 residents); the positivity rate (number of positive test results compared to all tests administered); and the health equity metric (testing positivity rate in the lowest-resourced areas). The color-coded tiers range from purple (widespread) to yellow (minimal).

The health equity metric is designed to address the disproportionate case rate of COVID-19 among certain populations. It is based on health equity indicators or conditions that impact public health, such as economic, social, education, transportation, housing and environmental factors. In order to move to a less restrictive tier, the lowest-resourced areas must meet a certain positivity threshold. The health equity metric ensures that individuals affected most by the pandemic are doing well enough that moving the county to the next tier is safe for everyone. Long Beach Police Arrest LAPD Officer on Suspicion

Long Beach Police Arrest LAPD Officer on Suspicion of Possessing Child Pornography.

The Long Beach Police Department has made an arrest of a police officer currently employed with the Los Angeles Police Department and booked for charges related to child sexual abuse material. In October of 2020, detectives from the Long Beach Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce received a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding possible online distribution or sharing of child sexual abuse material. During their investigation, detectives gathered sufficient information to identify the suspect and develop probable cause for an arrest.

Detectives identified the suspect responsible for these alleged crimes as 52-year-old James Diamond. On Wednesday morning, May 5, 2021, Diamond was taken into custody in the City of Huntington Beach as he was outside of a business on the on the 5000 block of Bolsa Avenue. Search warrants were subsequently served at Diamond’s residence in the City of Long Beach and at his place of employment in the City of Los Angeles. Diamond was booked on two felony counts of Possession of Child Pornography and two felony counts of Distribution of Obscene Matter Depicting a Minor. Diamond’s bail was set at $100,000.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s Professional Standards Bureau has been notified of Diamond’s arrest and the department will be conducting an administrative investigation. Any questions related to Diamond’s employment status or the administrative investigation can be directed to the Los Angeles Police Department.
