Two killed in wrong-way collision on 91 freeway.

On Sunday morning at 5:30am Long Beach Fire and CHP responded to a collision that occurred on the 91 freeway.

Two people were killed when a driver going westbound in the eastbound lanes of the freeway collided with another vehicle.

The eastbound lanes of the 91 Freeway and the northbound lanes of the 710 Freeway at the 91 were closed while authorities work to clear the crash.

CHP is currently investigating.

On Saturday, at 1:20 a.m., LBPD officers assigned to the Downtown Entertainment District heard gunshots nearby 200 Block of North Pine Avenue. They located two victims, which later resulted in the death of a male adult.

Officers immediately observed a crowd gathering around a male adult laying on the sidewalk suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso. A person identified as an off-duty nurse rendered aid to the victim until Long Beach Fire personnel arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The decedent has been identified as 36-year-old Javante Fearence of Long Beach.

Officers also located a second male adult victim suffering from a single gunshot wound to the upper torso. The second victim was transported by Long Beach Fire personnel to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.

Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe the suspect, a male adult, and the victim were involved in a verbal dispute when the suspect produced a firearm and shot the victim. The suspect fled on foot northbound on Pine Avenue. The second shooting victim is believed to have been an unintended target. The murder is being investigated as possibly gang-related.

Our Department will continue to utilize our investigative and patrol resources, plus all available technology to bring the person responsible for this crime to justice. Detectives are reviewing video footage evidence in the area in the hope of identifying the suspect.

In an abundance of caution, the Police Department will continue to have increased staffing in and around our downtown entertainment areas.

Long Beach Police Plan Checkpoint this Friday.

LBPD will hold a DUI Checkpoint on July 23, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. in the South Patrol Division.

Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI crashes and arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired.

During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

As the state continues to work to stop the spread of COVID-19, the Long Beach Police Department is committed to keeping the public safe.

“The safety of our community is and always will be our mission,” Sergeant Steve Smock said. “We are still out there looking for impaired drivers because driving under the influence is still dangerous.”

The Long Beach Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving or operating heavy machinery, which includes driving a car. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

If you plan on drinking or taking medications that may impact your ability to drive safely, plan on staying at home.

Drivers charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

LBPD Detectives Arrest 45-Year-Old Nathaniel Ford

LBPD Detectives Arrest 45-Year-Old Nathaniel Ford for a Possible Murder.

On July 17, 2021 at approximately 11:23 a.m., detectives from the Special Investigations Division located and arrested Nathaniel Ford, a 45-year-old person experiencing homelessness in Long Beach.

Ford was arrested during a traffic stop in the 1400 block of Pacific Avenue after Homicide detectives collected evidence of his involvement in the July 15, 2021 shooting death of Dalila Williams.

Following the arrest, detectives responded to a residence associated with Ford in the 1700 block of E 61st Street in the City of Los Angeles where a firearm and various other evidence was collected. The firearm will be sent to the Long Beach Police Department’s Forensic Science Services Division where it will undergo ballistic testing to compare it with evidence collected at the scene of the murder.

Ford was booked on one count of murder and is being held in the Long Beach City Jail on $2,000,000 bail.

At this point in the investigation, detectives believe Williams and Ford were not known to one another when they became involved in the dispute which led to the shooting. Detectives anticipate presenting their case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office early next week for filing consideration.

44-year-old Woman Shot and Killed in Long Beach.

On Thursday, at approximately 11:50 p.m., LBPD officers were dispatched to a report of shots fired in the 1700 block of Pine Avenue, which later resulted in the death of a female adult. Upon arrival, officers located a female adult victim in the street suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to the upper torso.

They immediately began performing life-saving measures until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on scene to render aid. The victim was transported by Long Beach Fire to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The victim has been identified as Dalila Williams, a 44-year-old Long Beach resident.

The preliminary investigation suggests a male adult suspect was involved in a dispute with the victim, which escalated into a shooting. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation by Homicide Detectives.

City of Long Beach requiring mask indoors regardless of vaccination status. The city has seen a 288% increase in average daily cases over the past two weeks as well as a current case rate of 7.5 per 100,000 residents, up from less than 1 per 100,000 on June 15. These trends are similar to those reported by LA County. In addition, the CDC lists Los Angeles County, including Long Beach, as an area of “substantial” virus transmission. The delta variant, which is more highly transmissible, is now the dominant strain in California, including in Southern California, comprising 60% to 70% of new cases.

Given these numbers, the City of Long Beach will align with LA County in requiring masking indoors regardless of vaccination status. Additional information on the implementation of this requirement will be available soon through an amended Health Order. Scientific evidence shows that vaccines continue to be an important tool in preventing COVID-19 cases. Vaccines also lower the risk for severe disease, hospitalizations and deaths. In June, 84% of new cases occurred among people who have not been vaccinated. No capacity limits or business restrictions are being implemented at this time. #longbeach

LBPD Seeks Public’s Help in Traffic Fatality Investigation. Detectives from the Long Beach Police Department’s Collision Investigation Detail are seeking the public’s help in identifying the driver of an orange 2019-2021 Subaru Crosstrek that was involved in a fatal hit-and-run traffic collision on July 6, 2021. The collision occurred at the intersection of 4th Street and Ximeno Avenue and resulted in the death of a pedestrian. The pedestrian has been identified as Jere Whitney, a 78-year-old resident of Long Beach. 

The suspect vehicle was previously described as a red Subaru Outback or Crosstrek. At this time, detectives believe the suspect vehicle is an orange 2019-2021 Subaru Crosstrek.
