LBPD Plan DUI Checkpoint this Friday. The Long Bea

LBPD Plan DUI Checkpoint this Friday. The Long Beach Police Department will hold a DUI Checkpoint on Sep. 3, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. in the East Patrol Division. Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI crashes and arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired.

During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

As the state continues to work to stop the spread of COVID-19, the Long Beach Police Department is committed to keeping the public safe.

“The safety of our community is and always will be our mission,” Sergeant Steve Smock said. “We are still out there looking for impaired drivers because driving under the influence is still dangerous.”

Long Beach Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving or operating heavy machinery, which includes driving a car. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

If you plan on drinking or taking medications that may impact your ability to drive safely, plan on staying at home.

Drivers charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Update at 3:30 p.m:

On Aug. 31, 2021, missing person Tasha June Merola was located unharmed at a store in the City of Lakewood.

The Long Beach Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating a 40-year-old at-risk missing person, Tasha June Merola, who was last seen on Aug. 30, 2021, at approximately 4:15 p.m.

Merola was last seen in the 4700 block of Sunfield Avenue in Long Beach. She suffers from medical conditions and may become easily disorientated. She is known to leave her residence and frequent McDonald's restaurants, 99 Cents Only Stores, Petco, and the Lakewood Mall area. Merola was previously reported missing on Aug. 21, 2021, under similar circumstances and was located in Lakewood on Aug. 22, 2021.

The at-risk missing person is described as follows:
Age: 40-years-old
Gender: Female
Race: White
Height: 5'4"
Weight: 130 lbs
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Hazel
Clothing: Pink Sweater and gray pants
Scars/Marks/Tattoos: None

Anyone with information regarding this missing person is urged to call our Missing Persons Detail at (562) 570-7246 or Police Dispatch at (562) 435-6711. Long Beach police release body cam footage of a recent officer involved shooting.

The suspect, Leonidas Enriquez, had reportedly concluded a series of violent crimes prior to the confrontation.

Once approached by LBPD officers, Enriquez reportedly refused to comply during the attempted arrest while in the possession of a visible firearm.

LBPD officers then proceeded to open fire, injuring the suspect who is not in custody at a local hospital at a $35,000 bail.

On Tuesday, August 24, the Long Beach City Council

On Tuesday, August 24, the Long Beach City Council voted to adopt the City of Long Beach’s balanced, $3 billion budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2022.

“Our 2022 budget is balanced, responsible and reflects the city’s strong recovery from this historic economic and public health crisis,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “The budget adopted unanimously by our City Council includes no cuts, no deficit, replenishes our reserves and positions Long Beach to continue building back stronger than ever.”

Long Beach is a full-service city and prides itself on providing a variety of resources and services to the community, including the provision and improvement of affordable housing; support for economic development and business assistance; the overall continuum of public safety and emergency medical response; a comprehensive homelessness response; maintenance of safe, clean and accessible parks and facilities; and support for infrastructure and livability improvements. The FY 22 budget maintains these services at the FY 21 level, made possible through the support of federal funds.

This event connects, inspires, and empowers people of all backgrounds to address all dimensions of inequity at the local, national, and global level.
