@longbeachcity to Distribute Early Learning Developmental Supplies.

The City of Long Beach today announced that it will offer free early childhood developmental kits for children from birth to five years, to support early development while at home. The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) will be partnering with the Long Beach Public Library (LBPL) to distribute kits to 2,000 young children. “As an educator, I know how much of a positive impact early education can have on a child’s life,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “These kits are just one way we are trying to keep kids and their families safe, while also promoting learning during this pandemic.”

The kits include books, art supplies and additional materials, and are developmentally appropriate, with unique supplies for infants from birth to 18 months, toddlers from 18 months to three years and preschool-aged children from three to five years. Each child will receive one set of supplies along with resource packets with information on local early childhood resources.

Distribution will take place Tuesday through Saturday, Nov. 10 through Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the following libraries, while supplies last:

Mark Twain Neighborhood Library (1401 E Anaheim St.)
Bret Harte Neighborhood Library (1595 W. Willow St.)
Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.)
Los Altos Neighborhood Library (5614 E. Britton Dr.)
Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W. Broadway)

Please note Billie Jean King Main Library has extended pick-up hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
People may reserve a developmental kit and schedule a pickup appointment by calling LBPL at 562.570.7500. Reservations through the library are required for those wanting to pick up kits. All locations will be operating in compliance with health and safety guidelines, and people are required to wear face coverings, maintain proper physical distancing and wait in their vehicles until their appointment time.

Supervisor Hahn Approves Supportive Housing Motel

Supervisor Hahn Approves Supportive Housing Motel Conversions. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn approved plans to purchase four motels in her district and convert them to supportive housing units for formerly homeless residents. The projects are part of the state’s Project Homekey effort to protect the state’s homeless residents who are at high risk for serious illness due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The projects approved today include ones in Long Beach, Norwalk, Hacienda Heights, and unincorporated Whittier with a total of 354 units.

The Motel 6 Long Beach site located at 5665 East 7th Street will be purchased for $5,615,000. It includes 43 rooms. This site will initially serve as an Interim Shelter site before being converted to permanent supportive housing. This site will be run by the Department of Health Services’ Housing for Health program and will have 24/7 security, housing navigation, medical and specialized mental health services on site. The County of Los Angeles will continue to provide supportive health and mental health services to the residents of this site after it is renovated into permanent supportive housing units.

Woman struck and killed by hit-and-run semi-truck.

Woman struck and killed by hit-and-run semi-truck. On Wednesday at approximately 9:00 p.m., LBPD officers responded to a traffic collision involving a semi-truck with an attached trailer and a bicyclist at the intersection of Artesia Boulevard and Downey Avenue, which resulted in the death of a female adult. When Long Beach police officers arrived they found a 56-year-old female resident of Bellflower who had sustained serious injuries after being struck by a semi-truck. The truck and trailer did not remain on scene and left before officers arrived. The Long Beach Fire Department responded and attempted life saving measures, but the female bicyclist succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

The semi-truck and trailer are described as having a white colored cab and large white colored trailer.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office will assist in notifying next of kin.

Wild police chase of a stolen U-haul truck ending in North Long Beach.

Wild police chase of a stolen U-haul truck that started in Buena Park and ended at Scherer Park in North Long Beach around 9:30pm on Monday night. California Highway Patrol chased the vehicle on the 22 freeway and 405 freeway and exiting on Long Beach Blvd. and headed to North Long Beach. The driver lead CHP up and down Long Beach Blvd for about 30 minutes when it turned into the Scherer Park parking lot. The U-haul struck a parked vehicle and made another U-turn before coming to a stop in the grass. The driver and a passenger were quickly taken into custody. The investigation is ongoing.

LBPD Arrest Murder Suspect in Long Beach. On Octob

LBPD Arrest Murder Suspect in Long Beach. On October 5, 2020, at approximately 2:15 p.m., detectives searching for a murder suspect attempted a traffic stop on a suspect from the August 4, 2020 murder of 40-year-old Juan Moreno of Long Beach. When detectives initiated the traffic stop in the area of 7th Street and Rose Avenue, the vehicle fled and failed to yield, resulting in a short vehicle pursuit. Within a minute of the pursuit being initiated, the suspect vehicle collided with two other vehicles, one occupied and one parked in the 900 block of Cerritos Avenue. The driver then fled from detectives on foot through the residential neighborhood. Detectives observed the suspect holding a firearm in his hand as he ran. No injuries were reported as a result of the collision.

Detectives pursued the suspect on foot until he was apprehended without incident on the 1200 block of East 8th Street. Detectives located the discarded firearm in a private yard adjacent to Craftsman Village Park. The loaded firearm will be processed by the Long Beach Police Department’s Forensic Sciences Division. Through their investigation, detectives learned the victim and suspect were involved in an altercation with each other prior to the shooting and were known to each other.

The suspect has been identified as 48-year-old Richard Young of Long Beach. He was booked on one count of murder and one count of ex-felon in possession of a firearm and is currently being held in the Long Beach City jail on $2,000,000 bail.

The case will be presented to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration later this week.

City of Long Beach Issues Guidance for Celebrating Halloween Safely. As residents begin to plan for the upcoming holiday season beginning with Halloween, the City is providing guidance for celebrating safely, including safer alternatives that still promote a festive environment amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Halloween activities that are allowed, in adherence with the City’s Safer at Home Order and related protocols, include:

Online parties/contests (e.g., costume or pumpkin carving).
Car parades, such as drive-by events or contests.
Halloween movie nights at drive-in theaters.
Halloween-themed meals at outdoor restaurants.
Halloween-themed art installations at outdoor museums.
Dressing up homes and yards with Halloween themed decorations.
Halloween activities that are not allowed include:

Halloween gatherings, events or parties with non-household members, even if conducted outdoors.
Carnivals, festivals, live entertainment and haunted house attractions.
Door-to-door trick-or-treating should also be avoided as it can be very difficult to maintain proper physical distancing, ensure that everyone is appropriately masked to prevent disease spread and because sharing food is not recommended. “Trunk-or- treating,” where children go from car-to-car instead of door-to-door to receive treats, is also not recommended as it can be challenging to avoid crowding and sharing food.

It is also important to keep the following precautions in mind when celebrating Halloween and other upcoming holidays:

Always wear a cloth face covering when outside and when around others that are not part of your household.
Avoid confined spaces. Actively stay away from indoor spaces that do not allow for easy distancing of at least six feet.
Avoid close contact with others. Stay at least six feet away from all other people who are not part of your own household, especially while talking, eating, drinking and singing.
Wash or sanitize your hands often.
Clean frequently touched items regularly.
If you are sick, or if you have been in contact with someone who is sick with COVID-19 or has symptoms of COVID-19, stay home and away from others.

3-Year-Old and Adult Male shot in Long Beach. On Sunday at 10:45pm Long Beach Police officers were called to 1100 blk of E 10th St regarding a hit shooting where a male 3-yr-old and a male adult had been struck by gunfire. Both victims were transported to local hospitals where they are now in stable condition. LBPD detectives responded to the scene and quickly learned the suspect’s whereabouts. He was taken into custody this morning in the City of Cypress. The suspect, a male adult, is believed to be a relative of the victims but motivation for the shooting is still unknown.
