Long Beach City College Citizens’ Oversight Committee Seeks New Member

Long Beach City College Citizens’ Oversight Committee which oversees District bond projects, is seeking a new member to represent a Bona-Fide Taxpayers’ Association. The application for this position will be open to the public through July 8th.

The COC oversees Measure E, a $440-million bond issue approved by voters in 2008 and Measure LB, a $850-million bond issue approved by voters in 2016. Funds are used exclusively for: Long Beach City College science, nursing, police, and firefighting classroom renovations, to
upgrade classroom technology and high-tech training labs, the repair of aging roofs, electrical, plumbing, heating, and ventilation; and the construction and reconstruction of school facilities
and sites.

Applicants must be residents within the LBCCD boundary lines, which includes the cities of Long Beach, Signal Hill, Lakewood and Avalon. Applicants must also be 18 years of age, and current members of a Bona-Fide Taxpayers’ Association. Per the Proposition 39 initiative of
2000, which was to reduce the threshold required to pass local California school district bond issues two-thirds super majority vote to 55% super majority vote. This initiative meant less voter approval unless a Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee is established and one member be active in a Bona-Fide Taxpayers’ Association.

The LBCCD Board of Trustees will approve a new member at their next July meeting. While the term of service for the new appointee is retroactive to July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2021, the appointee must also attend two mandatory meetings each year with the COC. The next COC meeting is August 12, 2019.
