City of Long Beach Limits City Services in Observance of Presidents Day

The City of Long Beach will have limited COVID-19 testing sites, city services, and city operations available on Monday, Feb. 21, with a majority of city-run offices closed in observance of President’s Day.

Both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln had birthdays in the month of February, with Lincoln born on Feb. 12 and Washington born on Feb. 22. George Washington was the first individual to have a birthday recognized as a federal holiday, according to the National Archives. In 1885, Feb. 22 was established as a federal holiday to honor all American presidents. In 1971, this date was changed to the third Monday of February, under the Uniform Monday Holiday Law, according to the same source.

City Hall and Billie Jean King Main Library and all branch libraries will be closed in observance of the federal holiday. This will include city offices such as Energy Resource, Water Department, Special Events and Filming, Community Park, and Long Beach Airport administration.

All libraries and library services will also be closed Saturday, Feb. 19.

Street sweeping will not be in service on Monday, but trash and recycling will run as scheduled. City-wide parking violations and meters will still be enforced unless a meter specifically states “Exempt on Holidays.”

El Dorado Regional Park and all other city parks and trails will be open on Presidents Day, but El Dorado Nature Center will be closed. All public swimming pools will also be closed.

The Towing Operations & Vehicle Storage Facility will be closed on Monday, but will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

Hotlines closed on Presidents Day include Community Hotline (562.570.INFO), Resource Hotline (562.570.INFO, option 5), BizCare Hotline (562.570.4BIZ). The BizCare Pop-Up at Admiral Kidd Park will also be closed.

The Citizen Police Complaint Commission office will not be available on Monday, and neither will building and safety services, including inspections, plan reviews, and the permit center. Code enforcement services, energy resource offices, fire headquarters, support services, fire prevention, and operations, including Marine Safety Administration, will not be in operation on the holiday.

More city services not available on Presidents Day include the health department and health facilities, housing authority, Long Beach Airport administration offices, and Long Beach Animal Care Services and spcaLA.

The Neighborhood Resource Center, swimming pools, water department offices, WorkPlace, Youth Opportunity Center, and Pacific Gateway Administrative offices will not be available, nor the utility call center for gas, water and refuse.

City services and operations which will be available include fire station and lifeguard stations, Long Beach Airport, Marina Offices (Alamitos Bay Marina, Shoreline Marina), and the main police station front desk.
