Suspect booked for One Count of Murder following Death of Long Beach Woman

LONG BEACH, CA – Homicide detectives conducted a thorough investigation and identified Lawrence Jackson, a 19-year-old resident of the City of Bellflower as the suspect responsible for the murder of Barbara Scott. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office later issued an arrest warrant against Jackson.    

On July 6, 2022, detectives from the Special Investigations Division located and arrested Lawrence Jackson during a traffic stop near the intersection of Hayford Street and Alondra Boulevard in the City of Bellflower. Jackson was booked into the Long Beach City Jail for one count of murder and is currently being held on $2,000,000 bail. Detectives will present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office later this week.

Original Release 3/1/22:

On Aug. 21, 2021, at approximately 9:02 a.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of Redondo Avenue regarding an argument between a male and female adult, with a female adult victim intervening, which resulted in the death of the female victim.

Upon arrival, officers observed an adult female victim being treated by Long Beach Fire Department personnel for a complaint of pain to her upper body. The woman declined any further medical attention and began providing information to officers. The woman described being in the alleyway when she intervened an argument between a male and female. The male approached the victim and struck her with his fist in her upper body, causing her to fall to the ground. The male and female then left the area. At the conclusion of her interview with officers, the victim to return to her residence.

On Aug. 21, 2021, at approximately 4:31 p.m., officers responded back to the 1000 block of Redondo Avenue to assist the Long Beach Fire Department with an unresponsive woman in her apartment. Officers arrived and determined it was the same woman from the earlier assault. The woman was unresponsive and transported by Long Beach Fire Department personnel to a nearby hospital.

On Sep. 16, 2021, officers responded to a local skilled nursing facility after receiving a report the woman had passed away. Officers notified the Los Angeles County Department Medical Examiner–Coroner who dispatched an investigator to the scene. The investigator was provided information from the earlier assault to assist with their investigation.

The incident was originally assigned to the Violent Crimes Detail where a thorough investigation took place and evidence was collected. On Feb. 28, 2022, the Homicide Detail was made aware of the autopsy results which concluded the manner of death is homicide. The case has been transferred to the Homicide Detail and is being investigated as a homicide stemming from the August 21 assault.

The victim has been identified as Barbara Scott, a 72-year-old resident of Long Beach.

The suspect is described as a male adult in his 20s, last seen leaving the area on foot with a female adult in her 20s.
