State Grants @portoflongbeach Record Sum for Zero- State Grants @portoflongbeach Record Sum for Zero-Emissions Future.

California State Transportation Agency officials earlier this month announced a $383.35 million grant for the Port of Long Beach to complete a series of construction and clean-air technology projects aimed at accelerating the transformation to zero-emissions operations and enhancing the reliability and efficiency of cargo movement.

As part of the state’s Port and Freight Infrastructure Program, nearly $225 million will fund a variety of zero-emissions cargo-moving equipment and supportive infrastructure projects across the Port of Long Beach, and include “top handlers” and other manually operated cargo-handling equipment, as well as tugboats and locomotives. The sum is the single largest grant the Port has ever received to support the zero-emissions goals of the 2017 Clean Air Action Plan Update.

Additionally, $158.4 million of the state grant will go toward the planned Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility, which will shift more cargo from trucks to on-dock rail, where containers are taken to and from marine terminals by trains. The $1.57 billion facility will be built in phases, with construction scheduled to begin in 2024 and be completed in 2032.

Hurricane Hilary, on path toward Long Beach, could Hurricane Hilary, on path toward Long Beach, could bring severe rain.

A storm headed in the direction of Southern California grew into a hurricane on Thursday and later strengthened to a major Category 4 storm, the National Hurricane Center reported.

It is expected to bring heavy rainfall to parts of the state as a tropical storm after hitting Mexico.

While Hilary is expected to weaken as it approaches, the remnants could still bring several inches of rain and potential flooding to the area.

Hilary could dump more than a year's worth of rain in parts of Long Beach. Because of the threat, a rare high risk, Level 4 of 4, of excessive rainfall has been issued for parts of California. It's the first time a high risk high surf has been issued for the area.

On Sept. 25, 1939, a tropical storm made landfall between San Diego and Long Beach, resulting in 50 mph winds and flooding that likely killed at least 45 people.

And in 1978, the remnants of Hurricane Norman made landfall near Long Beach, though by then, the storm had been downgraded to a tropical depression.

Air Force selects Long Beach startup for $235 mill Air Force selects Long Beach startup for $235 million prototype aircraft project.

The Department of the U.S. Air Force selected JetZero for the next phase of a blended wing body prototype aircraft project Aug. 16.

Based in Long Beach, CA, JetZero holds a prominent place in the history of the Blended Wing Body (BWB) design, being founded by the aviation trailblazers responsible for the invention of the original BWB. In 2023, this California-based startup unveiled its Z5 project, which has the potential to accommodate 250 passengers. An aircraft of this type would have a wingspan slightly greater than a Boeing 747 and could operate from existing airport terminals.

The goal of the contract is to demonstrate the capabilities of BWB technology, giving the Department of Defense and commercial industry more options for their future air platforms.

@longbeachcity encourages residents to reduce the @longbeachcity encourages residents to reduce the number of non-emergency calls to 9-1-1 Dispatchers through new educational campaign

The City of Long Beach Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications, responsible for the delivery of the City’s Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services, is launching their “Help Us Help You” campaign to reduce the number of non-emergency calls answered by 9-1-1 Dispatchers. Through the educational campaign, the City encourages residents to “‘Help Us’ reduce the number of non-emergency calls answered by 9-1-1 dispatchers, so the City can ‘Help You’ by more quickly answering and responding to emergency calls for service.”

Last year, Long Beach 9-1-1 Public Safety Dispatchers received more than 575,000 calls, which equates to 1,575 calls per day, or 65 calls every hour. Of these calls, 50-percent were for non-emergency assistance. In May 2022, the City launched a non-emergency phone tree to connect callers directly to a pre-recorded list of commonly requested non-emergency City services in effort to alleviate the inundation of non-emergency calls and provide dispatchers with additional time to assist residents requiring immediate police, fire or emergency medical services. While the non-emergency phone tree has helped alleviate 9-1-1 phone traffic, there is still a need to reduce the number of incoming non-emergency calls on the emergency line.

The “Help Us Help You” campaign will educate the community on how to connect to non-emergency City services without the assistance of a 9-1-1 Dispatcher by highlighting, easily accessible resources to residents.

Featured resources include the Go Long Beach app, where users can report non-emergency issues including graffiti, potholes and illegally dumped items; the non-emergency phone tree (562.435.6711); and the newly launched “One Call to City Hall,” which enables residents to access non-emergency services through a single phone number (562.570.5000). "Help Us Help You” will also promote a database where residents can access a wide variety of common non-emergency City services through the City’s “Who Do I Call” web-based directory.

Two Aquatic Playgrounds now open for Summer. The Two Aquatic Playgrounds now open for Summer.

The City of Long Beach opened the popular inflatable “Wibit” aquatic playgrounds at Alamitos Beach and Bayshore Avenue this summer, offering residents and visitors of these Long Beach beaches free, family-friendly fun and active water play all summer long through Monday, Sept. 4.

“These Wibit playgrounds will provide the community with free fun in the water activities during the hot days of summer,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “We continue to enhance the beauty, safety and recreation at our City beaches to create welcoming environments the entire family can enjoy.”

The Alamitos Beach Wibit – located south of Ocean Boulevard and east of Shoreline Drive—includes multiple floating play structures such as springboards, bouncers, monkey bars and other elements to encourage water play. The Bay Shore Avenue Wibit—located at 5415 East Ocean Boulevard—includes multiple climbing structures, bouncers and domes.

“Last summer, our shoreline was a major destination for family-friendly fun in the sun, thanks to the Alamitos Beach Wibit floating playground,” said Vice Mayor Cindy Allen. “We’re so excited to welcome it back again this year for our residents and visitors to enjoy all summer long.”

“Bring your beach gear and get ready for an amazing summer of family play on the water at these floating playgrounds,” said Third District Councilmember Kristina Duggan. “I look forward to seeing everyone at the Bay Shore Avenue Wibit.”

The following rules will apply to all participants during Long Beach Lifeguard supervised hours of operation, daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at each aquatic playground location:

All participants (adults and children) are required to pass a swim test prior to accessing waterplay features.
Each child under 9 years of age must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
Life jackets and personal floatation devices are not permitted while utilizing waterplay features.
