LBLN Weekend Round-up

Don’t have any plans this weekend? Long Beach Local News has compiled a list of events to keep you busy.

Midsummer Scream Halloween and Horror Convention is back this weekend at the Long Beach Convention Center. For more information about this convention, visit our website here. 

Pirate Invasion is the largest pirate and mermaid festival in California and will be at the Harry Bridges Memorial Park at 1126 Queens Highway this weekend. The hours for Saturday at 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Sunday hours are 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Tickets for this all-ages event run between $5 and $75. Attendees can enjoy a fire show, mermaid grotto, pirate marketplace, kids zone, and live music.

FRIDAY

Christopher Taco Magician will be holding a magic show at the Brewitt Neighborhood Library at 4036 E. Anaheim from 3 p.m. – 4 p.m.

SATURDAY

The Great LA River Clean-up is hosted by Friends of the LA River. The event’s mission is to collect trash and prevent waste from reaching our ocean. It is advised that attendees wear closed-toe shoes and clothes they don’t mind getting a bit muddy. Clean-up supplies will be provided. The clean-up takes place at the Golden Shore Marine Biological Reserve at 201 Golden Shore from 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Summer Bangout Beach Charity Volleyball Tournament is raising funds to help teachers with school supplies for this upcoming year, provide food and groceries to 250+ families in need and provide equipment for local high school volleyball programs. There will be food vendors, music, activities, and raffles.  The tournament will be held at Rosie’s Dog Beach at 4300 E. Ocean Blvd from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The Summer Cello Fest will be held from 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the El Dorado Neighborhood Library located at 2900 Studebaker Road. The students of Long Beach Cello Studio will play alongside a few professional cello players. This event is for ages 6 and up. 

Community Appreciation Day is a free family-friendly event that will provide attendees with counseling, haircuts, and financial planning sessions. Kids will be able to enjoy crafts and activities. It will be held at Praise Temple Church. 516 Linden Ave from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tickets from Eventbrite must be printed out for select services.

A Women’s Self-defense Seminar will be at the Guv’nors Boxing Club located at 1630 E. Anaheim St from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The seminar will cover awareness, prevention, various self-defense techniques, and stress inoculation. Tickets run from $60-$100 and are on sale until July 30. 

SUNDAY

One of the largest dragon boat competitions in California is Long Beach Dragon Boat Fest. There will also be Chinese traditional art demonstrations, Chinese acrobats, traditional dance and martial arts performances. The event goes from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Marine Stadium, located at 5255 E. Paoli Way.

Metal Yoga will be held at Supply and Demand at 2500 E. Anaheim St. Tickets are $5. 60 minutes of vinyasa flow to the top metal hits. 

Art for All – Pattern and Design with Adrian de la Pena is part of the Compound’s All for Art series that features artist-led family workshops. The workshops are for all ages and are held at the Compound, 1395 Coronado Ave from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. Tickets range from free to $25. 

MMD is unveiling a new mural from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m at 1901 Atlantic Ave. MMD held a contest for local artists to create a mural and the winning submission is a tribute to Long Beach. A limited number of prints signed by the artist will be available.
