Checkpoint Friday Night by LBPD in Long Beach. To Checkpoint Friday Night by LBPD in Long Beach.

Tonight Long Beach Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint from 6:00 p.m.- 2:00 a.m. in the West Division.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Lt. Jose Flores said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”

The Long Beach Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On Tuesday, at 11:32 p.m., Long Beach police officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of Lewis Avenue regarding a hit shooting, which resulted in the death of a 12-year-old boy and injuries to a 14-year-old girl.

Upon arrival, officers contacted three victims, a 12-year-old male victim with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper body, a 14-year-old female victim with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower body, and an uninjured 13-year-old female victim. Both victims were transported to local hospitals by Long Beach Fire Department personnel. The 12-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The 14-year-old girl was treated for a non-life-threatening injury.

Homicide detectives responded to the scene and initiated an investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were walking on the sidewalk when they were approached by the suspect vehicle, containing at least two male suspects. An unknown number of suspects shot at the victims.

“The shooting that took place last night is devastating. A young boy’s life has been cut short due to an intolerable act of gun violence”, said Chief Wally Hebeish. “While we mourn this loss as a community, our officers will not stop working to locate and arrest those responsible for this tragedy.”

The decedent has been identified as 12-year-old Eric Gregory Brown III of Long Beach.

Sewage Spill Close Beaches in Long Beach. Long B Sewage Spill Close Beaches in Long Beach.

Long Beach City Health Officer, Dr. Anissa Davis, ordered all open coastal swimming areas in Long Beach temporarily closed for water contact due to a sewage spill. State law requires temporary closure and posting at beaches in these situations, out of an abundance of caution, until the water quality meets State requirements.

According to a report received today from the Los Angeles County Sanitation District and from the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, approximately 250,000 gallons of sewage was spilled in nearby Downey. The spill report indicated that this was a result of sewer main line overflow caused by a blockage.

Water from the Los Angeles River connects to the Pacific Ocean in Long Beach, which means pollution anywhere upriver can affect the coastal waters of the City. Long Beach has approximately seven miles of public beach. The City of Long Beach Health Department’s Recreational Water Quality health inspection team is monitoring water quality along the affected beach sites. Water monitoring will continue until results comply with State water quality standards.

People can call the Water Hotline at (562) 570-4199 or visit longbeach.gov/beachwaterquality for the latest status on Long Beach recreational beach water quality.
To protect the safety of the public, water samples are collected and tested routinely to monitor bacterial levels. For their safety, the community is encouraged to pay close attention to any warning signs posted at the beach.

UPDATE: Man stabbed to death on Long Beach train UPDATE: Man stabbed to death on Long Beach train

Long Beach police officers arrived and located a male adult victim on board the Los Angeles Metro Rail suffering from multiple stab wounds to his upper body. Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on the scene and removed the victim from the Metro Rail to render medical aid, before transporting the victim to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Homicide Detectives responded to the scene to investigate the incident. Through their preliminary investigation, detectives determined that the victim boarded the Metro Rail outside the City of Long Beach. Sometime after the Metro Rail entered Long Beach, three unknown male suspects boarded, immediately approached the victim, and began physically assaulting him. During the assault, one of the suspects produced a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times which ultimately resulted in the victim’s death. When the Metro Rail came to a stop at the Metro station near 1st Street and Pine Avenue, the suspects exited and fled the scene on foot prior to officer’s arrival.

At this time, the victim is only being described as a male adult in his approximate 20s. His identification and notification to the next of kin will be conducted by The Los Angeles County Department of the Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

The investigation to determine the motive for the stabbing remains under investigation, however, the incident does not appear to be random.

Detectives are currently looking for additional witnesses to the incident and for any existing cell phone video evidence showing the suspect(s). Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact Homicide Detectives Donald Collier or Chasen Contreras at (562) 570-7244.
