LPBD Officers and SWAT Team respond to Assault Incident on Cedar Avenue

LONG BEACH – Long Beach Police Department has released preliminary information regarding an incident that took place on Jan. 19 on Cedar Avenue.

At approximately 2:22 a.m., officers responded to the 600 block of Cedar Avenue regarding an assault with a deadly weapon. Upon arrival, officers contacted a male adult victim with non-life-threatening injuries to the upper body. Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and treated the victim for his injuries.

Responding officers attempted to make contact with a male adult suspect, however he barricaded himself inside of a residence. Preliminary investigation suggests the victim was in a verbal altercation with the suspect, which resulted in the suspect battering the suspect with a blunt object.

Officers established a perimeter, the SWAT team was activated, and nearby residents evacuated and/or sheltered in place. Officers made contact with the suspect, negotiators attempted to deescalate the situation for several hours, but the suspect refused to surrender.

A short while later, a use of force occurred, and the suspect was taken into custody. The Long Beach Fire Department, who were already on scene, transported the victim to a local hospital for his minor injuries.
