Hit-and-Run Kills Man Working inside Security Guard Shack

On Saturday at 3:09 p.m., LBPD officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue regarding an injury hit-and-run collision which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Upon arrival, police officers discovered a vehicle had collided into a security guard shack, striking the security guard who was inside. Officers performed life-saving measures on the security guard until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived. Fire Department personnel continued administering life-measures, but the security guard succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2012 Chevy Tahoe was driving at a high rate of speed when it appeared to lose control and strike the security guard shack, which was occupied by a security guard at the time of the collision.

The driver of the Chevy Tahoe abandoned the vehicle, fled on foot and is currently outstanding.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and identified the security guard as 54-year-old Derrick Smith of Los Angeles.

Anyone with information regarding the collision is asked to contact Detective Kelsey Myers or Detective Shawn Loughlin of the Long Beach Police Department Collision Investigation Detail at (562)570-7355.
