City of Long Beach ordered a curfew effective city

City of Long Beach ordered a curfew effective citywide at 6 p.m. this evening for the safety of the public.
No persons shall travel or be upon the public streets, avenues, alleys, parks, ways or any other public place in the City of Long Beach for the duration of this curfew, except as expressly authorized. For the purposes of this curfew regulation, “travel” shall include, but is not limited to, traveling on foot, bicycle, skateboard, scooter, motorcycle, or automobile or any other means of conveyance.
All businesses, including those listed as ‘essential’ in the City’s Health Order, shall close by 6 p.m. today.
Law enforcement personnel, firefighting personnel, emergency health care providers, emergency medical personnel, civilians engaged in police or emergency work, individuals seeking emergency care, individuals travelling to and from their place of employment, representatives of the media, businesses closing up their operation(s), persons experiencing homelessness without access to a viable shelter, and persons assisting with clean-up efforts of any destruction resulting from civil unrest are exempt.
On May 31, 2020, City Manager Tom Modica, as the Director of Civil Defense of the City of Long Beach, first proclaimed a local emergency in Long Beach and ordered the curfew per the powers listed in the Municipal Code.
On May 30, 2020, due to ongoing acts of civil unrest and limited local resources, Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed a State of Emergency for all of Los Angeles County and directed all residents to heed the advice of local emergency officials. Long Beach Municipal Code 2.69 empowers the Director of Civil Defense (City Manager) to proclaim, subject to ratification by the City Council within seven days, the existence or threatened existence of a local emergency when the City is affected or likely to be affected by a disaster or major emergency and the Council is not in session.
The curfew will remain in effect until 6 a.m. June 3, 2020, unless extended if the situation warrants.

Pedestrian Killed During Police Pursuit in Long Be

Pedestrian Killed During Police Pursuit in Long Beach. On Tuesday, May 26, 2020, at approximately 11:10 p.m., officers were involved in a pursuit of a vehicle fleeing the scene of a commercial burglary in progress to a licensed marijuana-related business. During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle collided with a pedestrian, resulting in the death of a male adult. Officers were initially dispatched to a commercial burglary in progress involving multiple suspects in the 2100 block of Gaylord Street. The calling party advised that suspects were inside the business cutting down marijuana plants. Officers arrived on scene within two minutes, detained three male adults outside the business, and requested additional units to assist. Officers also observed a suspect fleeing the scene in a 2016 Mercedes Benz GLE and a pursuit was initiated and approved.

The pursuit lasted approximately five minutes and included both surface streets and the 103 and 710 freeways. During the pursuit, the driver of the Mercedes Benz, who was traveling at a high rate of speed, drove through a red light at 6th Street and Magnolia Avenue and struck a pedestrian that was legally crossing the street while walking his dog. The suspect continued to flee before being involved in a second collision with a fence in the area of Pine Avenue and 6th Street where he was taken into custody. The suspect was believed to be driving while under the influence of drugs during the time of the incident.

Immediately following the collision with the pedestrian, assisting officers rendered aid to the pedestrian until Long Beach Fire Department arrived on scene and determined the pedestrian deceased. The pedestrian’s dog was also found deceased at the scene as a result of the collision.

The pedestrian has been identified as 32-year-old Jose Hernandez from Long Beach.

Officers conducted a search of the business and arrested three additional suspects, for a total of six suspects arrested at the commercial burglary location.

Pedestrian struck and killed in West Long Beach On

Pedestrian struck and killed in West Long Beach On 5/11/20 at approximately 6:40 p.m., officers from the Long Beach Police Department were dispatched to the area of Santa Fe Avenue and Hill Street regarding an injury traffic collision between two vehicles. Upon their arrival, officers located two vehicles and a pedestrian who had also been struck. The pedestrian was not conscious and not breathing.

The Long Beach Fire Department responded and administered medical aid to both drivers and the pedestrian. The pedestrian succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Both drivers of the two vehicles were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2017 Lexus IS200 was traveling southbound on Santa Fe Avenue at a high rate of speed. The Lexus ran the red light at Hill Street and struck a 2003 Honda Odyssey that was traveling eastbound on Hill Street. The impact caused the Lexus to spin and collide into a pedestrian who was in a marked crosswalk attempting to legally cross Santa Fe Avenue on a green light.

It is believed the Lexus was racing another vehicle right before the collision occurred. The other vehicle did not remain on scene and left. That vehicle is described as a black Nissan 350Z with a slatted window covering on the back window.

The driver of the Honda Odyssey sustained minor injuries. The driver of the Lexus is in stable but critical condition. Drugs and alcohol do not seem to have been a factor in this collision.

The pedestrian has been identified as 59-year-old Josephine Espiritu from Long Beach.

The driver of the Lexus has not been arrested for the incident and remains in a local hospital receiving treatment. Detectives will be presenting the case to the District Attorney's Office today for filling consideration.
