Judge Denies Preliminary Injunction Ordinance of C Judge Denies Preliminary Injunction Ordinance of City’s “Hero Pay” for Grocery Workers. Ordinance.”

The City of Long Beach is pleased that District Court Judge Otis Wright has denied the California Grocers’ Association motion for a preliminary injunction. This will allow Long Beach’s Premium Pay for Grocery Workers Ordinance to stand and ensure that grocery stores pay workers fair compensation in recognition of the risks they are undertaking by continuing to provide their essential services during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We are pleased that Judge Wright agreed with the City’s position regarding the critical role grocery store workers play in the community during this time of pandemic and national emergency,” said Long Beach City Attorney Charles Parkin. “He clearly listened to the legal arguments carefully and thoughtfully and was well-versed in the relevant case law on this issue, and in the end came to the conclusion that there was no basis to stop the City from enforcing our ‘Hero Pay’ Ordinance.”

Long Beach shooting leaves one dead, two wounded. Long Beach shooting leaves one dead, two wounded.

On Monday at 10:45 a.m., Long Beach police officers were dispatched to the 300 block of E. 25th Street regarding a shooting, which resulted in the death of a male adult. Upon arrival, officers located a male adult inside the residence suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Officers rendered medical aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later that day. The decedent has been identified as Lavelle Brandon, a 45-year-old resident of Long Beach.

A short while later, officers contacted a 49-year-old female and a 51-year-old male who self-transported to a local hospital with gunshot wounds. The female adult sustained gunshot wounds to her lower torso and the male adult sustained gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Through their investigation, officers determined the two subjects were shot at the 300 block of E. 25th Street incident.

Based on their preliminary investigation, detectives believe all three subjects are known to each other and that a dispute between them occurred in the street outside a residence, which escalated to an exchange of gunfire between two of the subjects. Detectives are actively investigating the involvement of each subject in the shooting. Two firearms were recovered at the scene. No suspects are believed to be outstanding, the motive is under investigation, and detectives are working to gather additional information.

Anyone with any information regarding the incident is urged to contact LBPD Homicide Detectives Oscar Valenzuela or Eric Thai at (562) 570-7244. Anonymous tips may be submitted through “LA Crime Stoppers” by calling 800-222-TIPS (8477), downloading the “P3 Tips” app to your smartphone (available at the Apple app store or Google Play), or by visiting www.LACrimeStoppers.org.

On Monday at 6:50 p.m., Long Beach police officers were dispatched to the area of Long Beach Boulevard and Del Amo Boulevard regarding a report of an injury traffic collision involving a motorcycle and a truck, which resulted in the death of a male adult. Upon arrival, officers located a motorcyclist and a truck that had collided. The Long Beach Fire Department responded and transported the motorcyclist to a local hospital in critical condition.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 1997 Chevy S10 truck driven by a 29-year-old male resident of Long Beach was traveling eastbound on Del Amo Boulevard and made a left turn into a parking lot. While making the turn, he struck a 2017 Honda Motorcycle driven by a 22-year-old male resident of Compton as he rode westbound on Del Amo Boulevard.

@longbeachcity being a Model for Administering Vac @longbeachcity being a Model for Administering Vaccines in California.

@cagovernor Governor Newsom took a trip to Long Beach Monday morning to tour the Long Beach Convention Center Covid-19 vaccination clinic and held a press conference with the @longbeachmayor over the state’s vaccination efforts. “We are getting close to seven and half million people that have received at least one dose of the vaccination,” said Newsom in a press conference in Long Beach on Monday morning.

Newsom showed appreciation for Long Beach’s efforts to vaccinate teachers and health care workers.

Newsom addressed in a press conference that vaccination sites across California have limited supply of vaccines due to a manufacturing issue.

“There’s not enough vaccinations, there’s not enough doses,” said Newsom. “There’s not enough vaccines to accommodate the need and demand.”

Despite the many disparities in vaccines being distributed throughout LA County, there have been over 7.3 million doses of the vaccine rolled out in the state of California. However, there are approximately 40 million people in California.

Newsom tweeted that Covid-19 hospitalizations are down by 41% and ICU admissions is down by 39%. Just one month ago, California surpassed 20,000 cases, with now only 6,760 positive cases.

“We are making progress,” said Newsom. “We are in a much better place than we’ve been.”

Newsom and Garcia also discussed in the conference the importance of re-opening schools for in-person instruction. More I do on our website link in bio. #longbeach
Long Beach Beaches Closed Due to Sewage Spill. Lon Long Beach Beaches Closed Due to Sewage Spill. Long Beach City Health Officer, Dr. Anissa Davis, ordered all swimming areas west of Belmont Pier in Long Beach temporarily closed for water contact due to a sewage spill. State law requires temporary closure and posting at beaches in these situations, out of an abundance of caution, until the water quality meets State requirements.

According to a report received earlier this morning from the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, approximately 26,241 gallons of sewage was discharged into the Los Angeles River on February 22, 2021. The sewage spill occurred in the City of Los Angeles and was caused by a construction activity to maintain a 48-inch sewer main line.

The City of Long Beach Health Department’s Recreational Water Quality health inspection team is monitoring water quality along the affected beach sites. Water monitoring will continue until results comply with State water quality standards.

Long Beach has approximately seven miles of public beach. To protect the safety of the public, weekly water samples are collected and tested routinely to monitor bacterial levels. For their safety, the community is encouraged to pay close attention to any warning signs posted at the beach.

On Tuesday at 6:20 p.m., LBPD officers responded to an injury traffic collision involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian in the intersection of McNab Avenue and Stearns Street, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

When LBPD officers arrived they located a male adult pedestrian who had been struck by a motorcyclist. Officers provided first aid to both parties, until the Long Beach Fire Department responded and transported them both to local hospitals.

The preliminary investigation revealed a motorcycle driven by a 23-year-old male resident of Long Beach was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Stearns Street when he struck a pedestrian, a 76-year-old male resident of Long Beach, who was crossing Stearns Street in an unmarked crosswalk.

The motorcyclist remained on scene, sustained minor injuries, and was transported to a local hospital. Alcohol, drugs, and distracted driving are not believed to have been a factor in the collision.

The pedestrian succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office will identify the decedent and notify next-of-kin.
